Eminence Alpha-6A 6" Midrange 8 Ohm
Eminence Alpha-6A 6" Midrange 8 Ohm is rated 4.7368 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent midrange!I used a pair of these to upgrade a pair of old American Acoustics Labs 4-way 5 speaker towers. They always had good bass extension and upper freq extension and overall output was more than sufficient to say the least. Their main shortcoming was mid range imaging and accuracy. The goal was to fix this.I pulled all of the closed back mids and constructed sealed sub-enclosures for the the alphas. I was hoping to use the upper end roll off to mate with a tweeter with as few parts in the crossover as possible. As luck would have it the VIFA C25SC06-04 popped up on sale for $10 each and the slightly higher output level matched up well so I tried them also.My first try was very close, the Alphas sound amazingly clean, natural and detailed.I needed to tune out a little interference between the tweeters and the Alphas though.I've ended up rolling the upper end of the Alphas off in the 4,600 area with a single order and that smooths the slight blip in the Alpha curve around 4,200 and helps the natural roll off. I ended up with a 2nd order on the VIFAs and a 1 ohm low impedance resistor to bring the tweeter level into line. By sheer luck the resistor also seems to have cleared up a slight phase issue between the mids and tweets, lol.I enjoy many different types of music and these babies will now do it all. Well recorded piano now sounds simply beautiful. Male and female voices seem true to life.I have the lower end cut at 200 hz with a single order so far with the old woofers. Level is an issue and I have to boost bass at this point, but new twelves are sitting under the tree and after Christmas I''ll be on the home stretch with this project. The speakers are in a big room but with an Onkyo 5007 pushing they'll rock the whole house long before showing any signs of distress.I highly recommend these Alphas, they have a very natural clean sound and sound beautiful at low and high levels.I will probably be trying out some more expensive tweeters at some point in the future. I'm quite surprised at how nice the VIFAs sound, but can't help but wonder what some ribbons might bring to the table. The Alphas are in for good though!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid speakerPaired this with a Selenium DT220Ti driver and 60X40 horn. Great combo - solid sound, no holes - speakers compliment each other very well. Installed in custom cabs for youth room at church. Not very big, but very nice sound.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tell my Future Former that I found Love!Twenty years of psychic torture and I can still love... this speaker @ least. I've been looking at chart after chart, trying to find high efficiency, smooth response (preferably up to natural roll-off) and usable bass. When I looked at the chart for these I knew I had to try them. I quickly found ordered parts to build a prototype for a 2.1 satellite speaker. I matched this with a Vifa DX25GT09-04 PE# 264-1020 (on sale until 2/28/14) The tweets and some of my x-over parts are backordered so I can't report how my design sounds but i did test this in a sealed cabinet (0.35cu.ft. with 0.38lbs. of poly). Even with no tweeter this sounds VERY nice and smooth full range. You can tell that there is something missing but it plays the fundamentals well enough to be used for background music all by itself. The bass is subdued but is there thanks to the gentle roll-off. According to A. J. Designer this setup has a Q of ~ 0.66 and is down 3db @ 155Hz. I plan to use the Eminence recomended vented 0.412cu.ft. vented cabinet tuned to 90Hz, (-3db @85Hz). When this was paired with the mylar tweeter in the cabinet (5khz x-over 6db on tweet only) it was somewhat overwhelming the tweeter.Since I didnt have the Vifa I cobbled together two goldwood domes (PE#270-176) that should approximately match the sensitivity of this driver. Now they were sounding really sweet. Vocals, sax, guitar, piano, surf, everything I threw at it sounded natural and smooth. Loons drove the dog nuts(loony?). It went very loud with just a Lepai amp (PE# 310-306). I will be buying Parts to make at least one more of these (probably 4 more actually). I can't wait to have at least a pair of these hooked up with a sub. Oh yeah, the construction was great too. These are built like a tank, in the USofA!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Modern ESS AMT3 ReplacementThis speaker is a true bargain IMHO, and really out performs most drivers I have come across, even at more then twice the price. In my experience it clearly out perform the stock AMT3 mid driver, the Peerless and Heppner drivers.Much clearer ,detailed and very smooth.I would recommend adding the PE 50 watt mono l-pad to dial it in.In fact, if you add the Dayton ST255-8 to the mix- and modify the cabs accordingly (two 3x6" rear ports, and line the cabinet with Auralex 2" foam, along with a front baffle brace) you have a truly world class speaker that can hold it's own against any high end speaker out there.Truly amazing what a little homework can do.Eminence really knows how to build no nonsense, well built, well performing world class drivers at bargain prices.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from CleanWith my old setup I used to suffer from muddy vocal. Since replacing the mids the vocals are clear even at peak volumes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loudest In The CityI have 2001 Monte Carlo and I have 8 6&1/2 with 6 1' inch tweeters in each door...... Let's just say that I can be heard from blocks away! The speakers have made me the loudest car in my city. The sound is clear, crisp and loud.... And I've never had any electrical issues or had to replace them . I would recommend them to anyone that wants to have clear crisp sound and system !!!!

Eminence Alpha-6A 6" Midrange 8 Ohm

Found a diy design that uses the alpha 8a.  Crosses the via dx25 to the 8a at 1800hz.  I can't use the 8a because it's too big.  Could I use the 6a with the same crossover? (Design is the pispeakers 1pi)

Asked by: corradizo4
You could use this in place of the 8a model, but changes to the crossover will probably be required.

I would like to know how these mids would work in my MTX AAL 2230 SPEAKERS.The original mids are lacking. Also would the open back mids have any issues with the sound pressure from the 2 - 12 inch drivers?

Asked by: Lizardman
This depends on what is lacking in the existing mid. If they need a bit more output to match up well to the other drivers this will probably work well, but the crossovers may need to be modified to give you the best sound. This will require a separate enclosure to isolate it from the woofers.

Should this driver be countersunk in the baffle when used with a tweeter that needs to be countersunk? I assume it's typical to surface mount.

Asked by: vapor
Flush mounting a mid-bass is not as important as a tweeter although it is still recommended.

what response do the Eminence Alpha-6A 6" Midrange have in a sealed enclosure

Asked by: Johnny123
You need to insert the driver specs into a "speaker box calculator" to determine the volume of the box. Use the spec of Total Qts .707 for flat frequency response. You can search the web for the calculator. It will also let you play with the size and show you how the response graph changes, and also give you ported options if appropriate to the driver.

How realistically low can I cross these over in a 3-way system?

Contemplating a 3-way system with 2 12" woofers (subwoofers, more realistically, Eminence Lab-12) 6" midrange, and tweeter in a horn crossed over 4.5K. System will be bi-amped with 18db/oct active crossover. Hoping to let the mid-range to play starting around 90Hz. Maybe you can suggest more suitable 6.5" midrange.
Asked by: Vinny
You'll have a huge hole in the midbass with so much bass section and virtually no air moving in the midbass area. You can build an extended response system (full range), but will always get better performance from a sub when placed in a corner, or separately from the system. ie sub in corner and satellites in and away from walls for imaging... If you were to go with a single 12", I'd cross to a pair of Morel MW164's or something of that flavor. Not sure why you want a horn tweeter. Are you creating a home theater/music system or pro-sound system - the two are conceived in very different ways.
