This 1" exit high frequency compression driver was designed and built by Eighteen Sound of Italy for use in EAW's (Eastern Acoustic Works) high-end SM129zi and SM159zi 2-way floor monitors. The ND1070 driver incorporates many innovative features, including a multi-element neodymium motor design for high flux density and low driver distortion, combined with a proprietary phase plug design for a smooth, coherent wavefront at the horn entrance and reduced distortion in the mid-to-high frequency band. The driver also utilizes a 1-3/4" diameter edgewound aluminum voice coil on a proprietary treated Nomex former for high tensile strength and energy transfer from the voice coil to the titanium dome.
Additionally, a copper ring on the pole piece decreases inductance above 10 kHz for improved frequency response. Excellent heat dissipation and thermal exchange is accomplished by the direct contact between the magnet structure and aluminum cover, with the side benefit of reducing power compression. The dual 2-bolt pattern facilitates driver use by placing the terminals where you need them, and is tapped for M6-threaded bolts. The Eighteen Sound ND1070 is also notable for its minimum crossover point of 1,600 Hz, which is exceptionally low for a 1" exit driver, and helps ensure optimal directivity characteristics when matched with an appropriate low frequency speaker.
Like most other Eighteen Sound products, this driver can be used outdoors and performs properly under inclement weather. Special treatment has been applied to the top and back plates of the driver to make it more resistant to corrosive salts and oxidation, while the Nomex former reduces the likelihood of voice coil swelling due to high moisture environments.
