Denovo Audio Knock-Down MDF 3.0 cu. ft. Subwoofer Cabinet for Dayton Audio 15" Ultimax Subwoofer

Even the easiest do-it-yourself subwoofer can turn into an arduous project; from uneven cuts, to measuring mistakes. CNC knock-down cabinets make it easy for the beginner to end up with amazing finished results without all of the time and effort necessary to perfect your woodworking skills. This cabinet is designed for speaker builders and designers who don't have access to expensive tools or a woodshop.

This particular cabinet is designed specifically for the Dayton Audio 15" Ultimax subwoofer, but works for any subwoofer with an overall diameter of 15-3/8" or less, and a cutout requirement of 14" or less. For optimum performance with the Ultimax 15" subwoofer, add three pounds of Acousta-Stuf polyfill for a Qtc of 0.707 and an f3 of 35 Hz.

During the CNC manufacturing process, rabbets and dadoes are cut into the back panel for precise panel alignment. A unique two-piece brace adds superior rigidity without affecting the subwoofer's performance. Both side panels feature 3/4" rabbeted extensions with recesses to perfectly install the first piece of the two-part, double thick baffle. Plate amplifier installation is made easy by following the scribed interior guide with a jig saw and by modifying one of the braces.

The end result is a resonance-free, sealed subwoofer cabinet that is purpose-built to extract the best performance from Dayton Audio's 15" Ultimax subwoofer. All that's left to do is finish it to match your décor or paint it to stand out. When your friends ask about it, you get the pleasure of saying, "I built it myself!"

Denovo Audio Knock-Down MDF 3.0 cu. ft. Subwoofer Cabinet for Dayton Audio 15" Ultimax Subwoofer
Denovo Audio Knock-Down MDF 3.0 cu. ft. Subwoofer Cabinet for Dayton Audio 15" Ultimax Subwoofer is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Woefully insufficient for the Ultimax! This is a fabulous, well designed, well machined, easy to assemble, beautiful sealed speaker box. Unfortunately the 15” Ultimax driver it was designed for is just WAY too much for this box to handle. I have to admit I was a bit skeptical building a ¾” thick box for a driver with the capabilities of the Ultimax. I think if you add about ½” of concrete to all five sides of the inside of the box, it might do the trick, but as-is, even with the recommended 3 lbs. of Acousta-Stuf, it just vibrates far too much. If plain old boom is what you’re after, this box will certainly suffice, but if high fidelity is your goal (which is usually the case for people building sealed enclosures!), then I’d recommend building your own enclosure or heavily modifying this one. (See my review of the Ultimax for more in-depth info.)Bottom line: I would only recommend this to a friend who wasn't looking for super high fidelity.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Creates a stunning, detailed bassDespite the fact that no instructions are included, this enclosure goes together intuitively and simply. All that is required are woodworkers clamps and wood glue. In order to mount either a plate amp or a set of terminals, you will need something to cut the opening in the back panel. A saber saw is ideal for the purpose. I ended up using a plane to clean up some of the joints, but overall, the cuts are very accurate and certainly more accurate that most woodworkers could do in a home shop. The Ultimax driver for which this enclosure is made is impressive to say the least. It weighs in at 32 lbs and features huge rubber surrounds for a good Xmax, huge magnets and a stiff nomex cone. It fits the enclosure perfectly. I installed one of the Yung 300 watt plate amps. Many would consider this amp to be a little small for a 15" sealed sub but it works fine for me.The sonic performance of this subwoofer is phenomenal. It provides very detailed, tight bass perfect for filling in the lower registers for your stereo pair or your home theater main pair. It has plenty of presence to handle LFE and probably a lot more than I need by choosing a more powerful amp. This is the kind of sound you would experience with one of the quality subs from companies like SVS, Hsu or Velodyne. I wouldn't trade mine for any 15" unit made by anybody. It is that good. Build one. You will love it.

Denovo Audio Knock-Down MDF 3.0 cu. ft. Subwoofer Cabinet for Dayton Audio 15" Ultimax Subwoofer

I am ordering a Dayton Audio 15" Ultimax Subwoofer chassis in Germany. As for the cabinet, I wish to build it out of plywood. Can you send me a document which includes all lengths of all parts of this diy-cabinet? That would make it much easier for me.

Asked by: Jules87
We don't have tech drawings available for these enclosures, but if you use the same external or internal dimensions with a 1-1/2" front baffle and a cross brace, your results will be identical.

Has anyone mounted a Titanic MKIII in one of these?  I see that the sub is just a tiny bit too large, but I was wondering if it was still do-able.  Thanks!

Asked by: Colt
The volume will work well for that driver, but cutout modifications may be necessary. It may also fit with the rubber gasket removed, but you will have to pull the gasket off and measure the raw frame diameter to see if it is smaller than the rebate in the enclosure.

I have a 15" Titanic MK3 I bought a few years ago (unopened). I am looking for a cabinet I can drop it into. Will this cabinet work? Meaning will it physically fit and is the air volume correct. Also have a Dayton 240W amp (300-804)  - Any suggestions?

Asked by: LouderPlease
Yes, this cabinet will work with the 15" Titanic MK3. I would however recommend a more power amplifier like the Dayton Audio SPA1000.

Built this box, adding spa-1000 amp & 15" Ultimax sub. Concerned regarding stock bracing, was considering adding two (2) 1-1/4" round wood dowels (17-3/4" length each) vertically for added strength. Will these dowels compromise sound & performance?

Asked by: azamudio10
The only thing it will do is increase strength but will take up about .0252cu.ft of internal airspace. This will raise the Q a tad but unnoticeable. You can add another pound of stuffing then.

Hi I'm looking at getting the Dayton Audio 15" Ultimax Subwoofer . I have used the subwoofer specs on the calculators and its saying i need a enclosure of 6.25 ft"3, Qtc 0.71, F3 29.68hz . Am i doing something wrong?

Asked by: maddog_1
All box calculators will provide different results do to different defaults, stuffing amounts, etc. The recommended sealed box volume for this woofer assuming typical fill is about 3.3 cubic feet, so the volume of 3.0 in this kill will have virtually no effect on the results you will hear. This F3 models at 35 Hz and F10 is 20 Hz which is what you can expect in-room.

Will the Dayton Audio DCS380-4 fit in this box?  Based on the specs of that driver, I will assume it does.  And if so, can I get really radical and arrange the box with that driver to be down-firing and install two opposing SD315-PR passive radiators?

Asked by: msutliff
The DCS380-4 will work in this volume although there may be baffle modifications required for mounting. I would not recommend porting or adding passive radiators with this woofer. Downfiring will be ok.
