Since the "carpet spikes" don't seem to be spikey enough (based both on the reviews, and looking at them in the picture). Is there a Dayton spike kit that will fit the threads (assuming there are threads in the top cone thingy) in these stands? Thanks!
I do not know what the thread size is on the stands, although I don't think the Dayton M6 spikes will fit. If you can verify the thread size on the stands as M6 the Daytons will work fine.

can these be shortened to 16-18 inches? sawing tubes down?
The tubes have inserts on the ends to accept the bolts that hold them to the top and bottom plates, so cutting them shorter is not recommended.

How can I plug the large tube for adding sand, and is there a funnel with a small enough opening to fit in that tiny hole at the top?
I would highly recommend using a bead of silicone to seal the bottom portion of the tube to the base of the stand. You should be able to find a funnel small enough to add sand at any automotive or hardware store.
