As with the rest of the Dayton Audio Reference Series speakers, the main focus of these subwoofers is ultra-low-distortion. A durable aramid fiber spider and extensive venting throughout provide quiet and uniform excursion for the Reference Series RSS315HF-4 12" subwoofer speaker. The black anodized cone, rubber surround, and custom basket give this driver and the rest of the Reference Series a unique, high-end look. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for music and HTI am very impressed with this sub. It is in home-made sealed box roughly 1.6ft^3 well braced and sealed being driven by an sa240 (great amp, btw). First off, the sub is very clean looking, it is mounted in a box painted flat black and is flush mounted, the contrast between the two is very attractive. Second, the sound is incredible. Under normal loads and turned roughly 60% gain it will blend flawlessly with my speakers (The room is roughly 400sq feet and has a 15foot opening to the second floor of vaulted ceilings of the living room...the exact opposite of an easy room to fill) for any type of music including some of hte more difficult rock. Pushed with a high bass song, things begin falling, my electronics begin jumping up and down making annoying noises, and my ears start to hurt all with minimal to no distortion. I don't have a meter, but it goes quite low, especially for a small sealed box. I love this sub and am starting a 15" project with a 500wt. amp now also.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great performer! There isn't much to say. I am very satisfied with mine in a sealed enclosure. Very clean output, great lows, and quality construction.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great HT SubThis sub replaced an old 12" JBL I had in a custom 2+ cu. ft HT enclosure. Terrific quality. The JBL was nicely built, and this one probably weighed in at about 2-3x what it did. I'm using it with the 240W subwoofer plate amp, and am impressed with the performance. Good output, low distortion, no bottoming out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from European build quality and excellent performanceThis driver is built very well with really nothing coming to mind for improvement. Very low distortion and if used in a well braced and damped enclosure with a high quality amp can compete with very expensive commercial subs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding sub!!!Put this sub in a 3.75 cu.ft. mdf box with 2 flared ports. Powered it with a 300 watt bash amp. It has plenty of punch with only 300 watts. this thing goes deep. 3db down 18.4 hz!!!!! I very highly recommend this sub to anyone who doesnt mind a big box.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from so so subFirst of all this is a very nice looking sub but that is the only thing nice about it. The sound is acceptable but not exceptional @300w rms(is a lot). I had build two custome boxes for it recomended by parts express techy. Which are the 12" Titanic MKIII Sealed 12" Titanic MKIII Vented boxes the sub sounds ok but I have to send tons of power to it to here anything. I have tried severals amps including Carver 1.5t, Kenwood M2A, and dayton240w rms 4ohm amp. SPL: 89 dB 2.83 V/1m not good SPL. I am going back to my Infinity 15DVC sub for HT which is hands down the better sub. Also have Dayton bookshelf speakers that consume alot of power too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great WoofersThese are simply the best 12" woofers I have ever heard in a car, period. I put two in my Ford Escape and they are awesome. Quality and volume are more than I expected.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Phenomenal soundPurchased to replace the tired driver in my JBL D112 Subwoofer. Without knowing anything about driver parameters, I simply substituted this for the original driver. The resulting sound quality is much better with noticeably more low frequency output.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great buyThis driver reproduces bass with authority. I ve had at least 5 different drivers in my DIY subwoofer enclosure this ones the keeper. Deep, accurate, hard hitting great for HT use. Would recommend to any DIY sub builder, and the price of $119 can NOT be beat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow!An awesome sub. Truly captures the lowest of lows. It replaces an older Phase Technology subwoofer that had blown, and it made the cab sound 10 times better. That true bass sound.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This woofer works very clean from 25Hz to ~ 250HzThis woofer is very solid. The suspension is harder than expected, yet the output is very clean. In a mid-size box this driver goes down to ~25Hz. I cross it over at ~250Hz at the top end. It replaces an old 12 inch JBL driver... wow what a difference in clean undistorted low bass. I would not go much higher than 250Hz due to a significant resonance ~ 1600Hz. Use at least 12dB / Oct in the crossover to avoid that frequency. Have I mentioned that Parts Express is great to deal with.... well now I have!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very high quality subwooferThis subwoofer handles very low frequencys with ease! Sounds from it are clean, full, and veryaccurate. This speaker is ideal for a driver for a very high end home theater subwoofer system with enough headroom to meet the requirements for even very high volume levels. It also complements music with the bottom end lows that complement higher end main speakers. Great product!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW, I just LOVE that DEEP SMOOTH BASS...I had two old Velodyne cabinets that had 15" Passive Radiators in them and the original drivers had some problems. I decided to try the RS315HF 12" driver because of all the good words I've heard about them. I must say that I now have a much better sounding Sub Woofer than what Velodyne originally had put together. I just love how well they integrate with other speakers I've used them with. They are a very musical Driver, I find myself enjoying music I seldom use to listen too.The RS315HF 12" Driver is AMAZING for its size. Make sure to buy two if you have a huge listening room. It just doubles your listening pleasure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ExcellentI replaced an NHT 12" sub with the RSS315HF and what a difference. These are the best value sub drivers on the market and the best looking. You simply can't go wrong with the Reference line.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Sub.I installed this sub in a sealed 1.6 cubic ft. box with 300w of solid power crossed @ 80hz.It is very nice at low volume and just pounds like mad when you turn it up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't Be Beat for the PriceI put this sub together in a similar design as the RS1200 before RS1200 was available. After some EQing it has great low-end extension sealed, and with 500 watts it can put out more bass than I can handle in my 400sqft listening room. The woofer stays clean and crisp sounding even at high levels. For the price I don't think this woofer can be touched.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sub, well builtThis sub is built very good for the price, huge magnet, nice motor venting, integrated tinsel leads, all nice stuff. For my build I went with a 4.5 cuft. box with a slot port tuned to 19 Hz. I just finished a few hours ago but on my first movie experience it was actually moving the pictures on the walls, not a dinky picture either its a 24x30 with a metal frame, not light. I was extremly impressed with the ability of this sub, it played sounds my other subs have never even tried to before. Also, I used the Dayton 240 amp to power it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High QualityI'm a speaker builder and have been using this sub in a custom built enclosure for over 2 months now. I am very impressed with the performace. It has musical qualities while still being able to fill a 3000cf room with bass quite nicely.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BeautifulFrom overall appearance to build quality to sound quality, this driver just exudes beauty. I have yet to find a subwoofer that can deliver the same level of clean, musical output at such a low price. An excellent choice for someone wanting a musical sub that can also do a decent job with home theater duties.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Haven't found a problem with it at allI've owned this sub for over a year and it's really a favorite of mine. I haven't experienced such clean and low bass perfomance like this outside of my IB sub installation. For the money I don't think there's anything better when it comes down to it. If there is another 12" sub out there that costs the same or less with the amount of performance the 12" HF possesses I would sure like to see and hear it. Still I don't think I will ever give up the RS. Plus it just looks great. Yep, it gets a five star rating in my book.

Open or closed for best musical response?

I will use this unit in a 3-way system where I would like to cross it over at around 250Hz, which is a bit higher than usual I suppose. To make this driver sound as "musical" as possible, is it best to go for a closed enclosure or is there no difference really with a ported enclosure besides the lower frequency extension?
Asked by: Maarten
for music, I always say closed. it has a much faster attack and is just more accurate and sharp.. you can get some good extention closed just a little bit larger. This sub with a powerfull amp will shake quite nicely

HO or HF for 2 cu ft sealed cabinet with SA240 amp?

I have the amp and cabinet, now I don't know which subwoofer would be a better choice. It will be used for movies and TV in our theater room which is 12'x21'.
Asked by: JTenn
Might work. This is the right woofer, really good speaker. But it's gonna want more space to breathe, + consider the amp takes up about 1/2 cu ft, so 4 cu ft minimum and port it.I use PVC tubing 2x 2x6" or 1x 3-4x5". For larger subs I use a toilet flange from hardware stores. They are cheap, paint-able, and look cool. Press fit if you cut the hole right.

Would swapping this speaker for the original found in a Dayton Sub-120 150 watt be a resonable upgrade for better sound?

Asked by: hoggman
Yes, it would. I believe this subwoofer box is sealed, and in it the RSS315HF-4 will be at a Qcb of approximately .770, with an F3 of about 36Hz. -6db at about 29Hz, and -10db at about 23Hz.It would be a bit under powered with this sub's amp, but it's an efficient subwoofer driver, and will likely play at a level more than good enough for most of your music and movie requirements.I own this driver myself, and find it very musical.

Is the impedance really 4 Ohm or is it less?

Did anyone measure the real-life average impedance on this sub?Reason for asking is that I want to connect it up to an 8 Ohm amp, which should be able to handle 4 Ohm as well but might give trouble with lower average impedances. Before anyone asks: the reason not going for the 8ohm version of this sub is that the 4ohm version is more flexible when it comes to re-using it in later designs.
Asked by: Maarten
Each speaker may measure slightly different. On average you will see 3.8 to 3.99 ohms on a meter with the speaker at rest. Impedance changes with frequency as well so the number is a reference point. You can use 4 as the number to calculate the impedance you are wiring to your amp. If it is 2ohm stable per channel then you can put two of these on that channel without fear.

Would 220watts min RMS run 2 of these at 8ohms and if not what would you recommend?

My power amplifier is a Kenwood Basic M2 have three of them and a M2A all of witch will produce min 220w at 8ohm and a 467w at 4ohm @ 0.004 THD. At the moment I am running 2 15" Kicker CVR rated at 500watts each sub woofer @ 8ohms each with one amplifier. and I am afraid of the amp blowing up
Asked by: VusstoppyPro
Yes, that will drive them fine. And as long as you are not consistently driving them into clipping, and they are well ventilated, you have no worries the amps will blow.Relax. LOL

which is better for a sealed home theater sub this or the ho version

60% music
Asked by: vander
In the Reference Series subwoofers, "HF" refers to "High Fidelity," where "HO" refers to "High Output." For mainly musical situations, the HF would be indicated. One is not necessarily better or worse than the other, they're simply optimized for clarity as opposed to sheer output volume. Both are very good.

Would this sub work as a car audio sub

I was told this would be a great sub for my car audio needs. I am looking for 2 subs to run at @2ohm total. I have a amp that output 650W RMS @12v. My enclosure is Q-Logic dual 12" enclosure, standard size.I know these are used primarily for home audio. Is there any reason they wouldn't be awesome in a SUV?
Asked by: brianemc2
Due to the available power that you have on tap, I'd rather recommend the Dayton Audio RSS315HO-4 12" Reference HO Subwoofer listed below.

what is the optimal enclosure size for ported sub?

i have this sub in a 5.1 cf box w/ 4 by 11 port. the combonation of the box & sub is too heavy. looking for something smaller like 3 cf or so. if you know the answer, can you give me the box size and port to use for optimal enclosure size
Asked by: KSHIZO
For this driver in a 3.0ft³ ported enclosure, your 4" port should be roughly doubled in length. Approximately 21-22" according to BassBox 6 Pro, referenced below for your convenience.

Whats the Big Difference?

Is there really a big difference between this and the Dayton Audio RSS315HO-4 12" Reference HO Subwoofer 4 Ohm?
Asked by: Tim 46528
The HF (high fidelity) subwoofers feature a two layer voice coil that has very low inductance and a lighter cone for music applications. The HO (high output) subwoofers feature a thicker cone and a four layer voice coil for high power home theater applications. They also work very well in small sealed enclosures.
