Product Details

Dayton Audio PM220-8 8" Wideband Midbass Neo Driver

The Dayton Audio PM220-8 8" midbass driver is based on the same platform as the acclaimed Point Source full-range drivers, but designed for esoteric high-performance applications requiring an extremely wide-bandwidth midrange or midbass driver. The PM220-8 model provides the ultimate in high-efficiency performance in a variety of system designs, including vented, transmission line, folded horn, or open baffle applications.

The PM Series mid-bass drivers feature ultra-linear Klippel-optimized neodymium motors with copper cap and shorting ring for low distortion, and lightweight, low-loss Kevlar-reinforced paper cones for exceptional detail and high efficiency. The wide bandwidth and extended upper range of these drivers makes them the perfect complement to ribbon and planar-magnetic tweeters.

Considering as strict mid-bass for doors in my Grand Cherokee. Doors are stabilized, dampened, and nearly sealed. I've had decent mid-bass, even sub-80 Hz bass from current 6.5's, but want more. 75 watts & x-over at Low 100Hz 12db/oct  High 350 Hz 12db/oct

re:I would recommend 1.2 cf with a 2.5" diameter, 5" long port tube for a tuning of 40 Hz. Thx MattP for the reply. I don't have design software. I think internal dimensions of 8.5" x 21.5" X 15" will get me 1.2 cf? Yes? What software do you recommend?

Asked by: RonJon
Those dimensions will give you closer to 1.6 cubic feet. if you cut the depth back to 12" instead of 15" you will have 1.26 which will be about perfect after driver displacement. We use BassBox 6 Pro for our modelling.

I want to make a high efficiency floorstanding 2-way speaker. What volume and port size do you recommend? Is it realistic to tune this for 40hz? I want to pair this with a Ribbon Tweeter. Thanks. Ron

Hello. The fullrange PS220-8 is very similar to this model. For a two way system with a crossover of about 3.2k, is there any advantage to using the PS220-8 over the PM220-8? Thanks.

Asked by: Liampasu
These will both have similar response profiles, but crossing at 3.2k means the wizzer cone of the PS model will not be doing much. I would say the PM would be a slightly better option for this crossover, although if you can get away with 2-2.5k crossover you will be much better off.

Will this work in a ported 1 cu ft box? If so, what is the best port size?

Asked by: Zacharious
This will work very well in that volume. I would recommend a single 3" diameter port that is 5-1/2" long for a tuning frequency of 48 Hz.
