Dayton Audio ME650C 6-1/2" Micro-Edge LCRS 15 Degree Angled Ceiling Speaker
Dayton Audio ME650C 6-1/2" Micro-Edge LCRS 15 Degree Angled Ceiling Speaker is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Fine Ceiling SpeakerFour ME650C LCRS speakers now serve as the ceiling channels in a Dolby Atmos 5.1.4 surround configuration. The ceiling is sloped at a slightly less than the 15 degree angle provided by the speaker and the speakers are aimed directly at the prime listening location. They are placed about 4' from the adjacent walls and about 2' in front of the front left/right and surround left/right speaker locations. The ceiling opens into a large crawl space above providing an infinite baffle configuration. Fiberglass insulation of 10-12" thickness fills the space behind each speaker. The speaker grills are easily painted and the installation template accurate and fast. The resulting frequency response at the listening seat (as measured with the Dayton Audio Omnimic) averages a tight +/-2 db from 150 to 20,000 Hz (1/12 octave smoothing) with very good uniformity between channels. The bass response falls fairly rapidly below about 120 Hz, so a subwoofer really is required for full range operation. A 150 Hz crossover frequency with 24 db/octave high and low pass slopes works very well to protect the woofers from low bass. The Audyssey MultiEq XT32 room correction system in my AVR confirms the wide smooth frequency response of the ME650C LCRS.So what's the sound like? Much better than would be expected given the size and cost of the speaker. No, they aren't the be all and end all of sound reproduction, but they do offer neutral tonal character in a small convenient package. Integration with the other speakers (Pi Speakers 3Pi center/surrounds and 6Pi cornerhorn fronts) is great and creates a very stable three-dimensional soundstage. The ME650C LCRS distinguish themselves well when playing Dolby Atmos-encoded soundtracks and are worth the consideration of any sound enthusiast needing ceiling mounted speakers.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not my favorite Dayton experience, but good value.I bought these to install for a client. He was my former employer and audio engineer so I went with a brand I can always depend on, Dayton. I took them out of the box to break them in for a few days before installing. One of them had the tweeters completely fallen out of its housing. It still worked but was really disappointing to have to put an assembled speaker together. They look beautiful, were EXTREMELY easy to install, and inexpensive, but I was a little disappointed with the sound. One of them had to have plywood 12" over it so I know that affected the bass a fair amount, but the other one was installed exactly as recommended. I didn't mind the lack of bass too much, but I was disappointed that I had to EQ a lot of high-end back in. Not the Dayton sound I know - that's why it lost a star - and that the 15 degree tilt is nice but the HF coverage is very narrow. I used an RTA to confirm what I was hearing and I obviously made sure the tweeters worked while breaking them in.If installing with a receiver with a nice EQ, I would still use these again as they have a great price point and are so easy to install.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent sound and looksInstalled 5 in living room of newly built house, also have 8" Dayton powered subwoofer for the lows. The look is clean and the sound is excellent. I am not an audiophile but I appreciate decent sound and these speakers deliver what I have been looking for all at a good price. The 15 degree offset is a nice feature. I would definitely recommend these for a modest home theater.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bass, nice crossover, ok mountingI've had 5 of these for about a year and they sound great, good bass and solid design. I was previously a home theater installer and must say these are a great speaker for the price and it's what I put in my home. Only gripe is the plastic mounting tabs can be a bit weak if you aren't careful. I'm not sure anyone would be willing to pay more for stronger mounting tabs, but just be very gentle, as I broke a few (4 of 28 some tabs) and jb welded them back together.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from nice projectInstalled these to replace some long time used tower speakers, have nice clear sound , not thumping low end but decent for use as home cinema at moderate volume levels.

Dayton Audio ME650C 6-1/2" Micro-Edge LCRS 15 Degree Angled Ceiling Speaker

I need to put the holes for these into my drywall before the speakers arrive (timing with painters etc...).  The specs on this page state an 8-1/4" mounting hole. Is that accurate so I can do this before receiving the speakers and associated template?

Asked by: ErikTheViking

Are these speakers too heavy for installation in a drop ceiling tile?

Asked by: MarkB82
Depending on the type of tile used it might sag over time. I would recommend using a bridge to handle the weight of the speaker. This will have to be custom made. I have used 1/8" masonite boards for this in the past with success.

Yes, they will work.

Are there any installation tips for installing these in a ceiling with blown insulation? Will the blown insulation get in the mechanical parts of the speaker?

Asked by: Bombertodd
Usually with blown insulation you just have to clear a small area around where the speaker cutout is going to be. Small bits of insulation won't hurt the speaker, but we do offer a bit of a "shower cap" for open back ceiling speakers if it is a concern. You can see them below.
