Dayton Audio MCA2250E 2.1 Channel Class D Plate Amplifier

Dayton Audio created the MCA2250E 2.1-channel plate amplifier for the speaker builder looking to build a custom computer sound system, desktop monitoring system, or space-limited home theater system.

The feature-packed MCA2250E includes everything that you need in an amplifier to make system integration quick and simple: independent level controls, stereo RCA line-level and 3.5 mm inputs, signal sensing auto-on, active 150 Hz, 12 dB/octave satellite speaker high-pass filter, and an adjustable 40 to 240 Hz, 12 dB/octave subwoofer low-pass filter.

Up to 50 watts RMS are available for the subwoofer, and 25W x 2 for the satellite speakers. A set of 5-way binding posts offer plug-and-play satellite speaker connection, while a set of 24" long, 16 AWG subwoofer wires are provided on the rear of the plate amplifier for internal connection to a subwoofer. 115 VAC to 230 VAC world-compatible power input.

I got a passive sub from a Sony home theater and 2 Sony mb105 bookshelf speakers. Another great match for the power of this amp. Sounds clean and mean. great job Dayton audio! I will the first to buy one when they make one with more power........ hint....

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good features but noisy power supplyThis is useful module and I'm pleased with the features and sound quality.The downside is the audible noise produced by the switching power supply; soundslike one of the transformers might have a loose lamination. This would be less of an issue if the module was inserted into the back of a subwoofer enclosure. My application has it mounted on the outside rear of my compact sub and sittingat ear level on my computer desk, and you can clearly hear the power supply singing away in the background; it's louder than the hiss coming from the speakers.I would recommend this product; with qualifications.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from can't go wrong!I had a radio shack optimus 10 in sub with a missing amp (origionally 100w powered sub) purchased on ebay. i had 2 sony mb150h bookshelf speakers on hand. I figured this would be the perfect choice for the dayton 2.1 amp. It was....it sounds excellent! it sounds very clean,no noise,and it surely rocks my den with either my iphone or vizio television. i am actually planning another one for my brother. he was very impressed with the sound and simplicity.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect plate amp for your next 2.1 system buildI had previously built a pair of bookshelf speakers using Vifa D25 tweeters and Dayton 4" aluminum-cone woofers, and the results were so good I decided to build a complete powered 2.1 system. So, I added a Tang-Band 5.25 subwoofer and the Dayton 2.1 plate amp to my shopping list.Result: It works as advertised, and fits pretty neatly into the back of a 12x12x12-inch subwoofer box along with a 2-inch port bell. A switching supply and all-Class D amplifier topology permit the unit to be small and light weight. Individual subwoofer and satellite level controls provide the necessary flexibility in matching the level of the bookshelf units to the subwoofer. I would gladly buy this unit again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from nice productI used this 2.1 plate amp to build a powered sub with my son, also driving two PC speakers with their internal amp bypassed.The sub was just over 1 cu ft, dual ported with dayton 8" DVC woofer.The satellites are very sweet-sounding hercules 2-way computer speakers, with a flaky internal amp, bypassed for this build.This is a smooth amp for the sub and the multitude of controls is just right for what it's supposed to do. There is attention to detail in its construction, though the backplate feels a little thin when handling it out of the box. Still, works fine installed.The satellites reveal a very slight edge/brilliance/harshness that was not present before using their internal amp. The tweets would easily reach for the sky with their oem amp, so I don't believe the plate amp is revealing weakness in the tweets that was attenuated before; I suspect the tweets are probably revealing some HF artifacts from the amp (wouldn't be the first time).Regardless, it's a good product, and seems to have enough build quality and SQ to meet the mail. He certainly likes it.For me, for casual listening it's great. If I were to build a set for critical listening, I'd want to bench-test one of these to ensure the HF was clean before committing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice replacement plate ampI bought a HTIB about 20 years ago with 5.1 dolby surround. 500 watts total. As I said that was 20 years ago, during that time that system's amps failed leaving me with a large sub and 5 speakers. I knew due to the age the old speaker were not going to live forever and didn't want to spend too much on a repair. Then I found this 2.1 Dayton Audio MCA2250E 2.1 Channel Class D Amplifier. 50 watts is not a lot of power and would not hurt the 20 years old sub, nor would 25 watts hurt the old satilite speakers. I removed the plate amp from the old the installed the Dayton Amplifier in it's place. Within minutes, I was up and running. Even at 50 watts, the sub and speaker sound great. I love the auto power on and RCA/mini stereo jacks which makes plugging it into MP3 players a snap. And the controls in the back are enough to tune the sound to my liking.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for a self-powered 2.1 systemI was looking for a tidy solution to my need for music on my patio. I had a pair of outdoor satellites, but no amp to drive them. I built up a little sub using this amp, a Dayton Audio SD215A-88 8" DVC Subwoofer, and a Knock-Down Birch 0.58 ft³ Subwoofer 11" Cube Cabinet. I can plug my satellites + a squeezebox receiver or an iphone straight into the sub, and I am ready to rock. The base response is pretty good, and the system pumps out more than enough volume for my small backyard. It was a fun and quick project.

(hehe)I tested the Satellite outputs for their frequency response since it states 150Hz - 20Mhz in the specs and I didn't really notice that when I ordered it. So I plugged in my Android phone via the Aux In 3.5mm and ran the "Favorite Frequencies" app and generated tones all the way down to 80Hz and it played thru the Dayton Audio B652 satellites just fine, so I was very relieved that it actually isn't cutting off those freqs. I'm using this amp as a replacement/upgrade to a 2.1 setup I already have in place for my HomeTheater in my smallish living room #20' x 14'# that was being powered by the Lepai 168HA 2.1 amp. My desire was for a bump up in power #more on the sub than anything else# and the Auto-On feature really attracted me because the wife was always forgetting to turn off the Lepai. I quickly threw together a small enclosure w/ 1/2" MDF to house this plate amp and connected it's inside sub output wires to a Banana plug terminal box mounted on the side of the enclosure. For the sub I have a Kicker Comp 8" 8-Ohm mounted into a Dual-Fold On-Axis T-Line enclosure I built to the specs generated by the Enclosure Calculators I found at DBDYNAMIXAUDIO on the web. Since I originally was using the Lepai whose crossover basically doesn't work, this sub already has an 80Hz Passive LPF wired into it. So I can't say if the built-In LPF does it's job or not... I just have it cranked to highest freq it'll go since I know the LPF in the sub will chop it off anyway. Anyway... output is SICK with this setup! The only thing that would make it nicer is if this amp had separate Treble and Bass knobs for the Satellites as I'm running the Audio Return Channel from the TV RCA's directly into this thing. But that's being very nit-picky. This thing rocks!I was going to attach a video showing playback thru the system, but the mic on the smartphone doesn't pick-up the low-lows righteously, so it doesn't do it justice.This setup is extremely high on the Bang-for-Buck scale. The B652's are 30, the Kicker Comp 8" was 49 and this amp is 98. So for just 200 #plus some MDF and liquid nails# I'm rumbling the snot outta my modest living room.The only negative was that somebody in PE's shipping department or at Dayton Audio's shipping department put the wrong kind of power cord in with the order. The amp takes your typical computer-type 3-prong.. and the cord was similar shape, but just a 2-prong. Which seriously I've never ever seen one be 2-prong like that before... weird.

Could you use this amplifier to power a pair of tower speakers?  The subwoofer could be run with the 50 watts and the remaining speakers could be run from the satellite outputs correct (as long as you have another set of connectors on the box)?

Will this run bookshelf speakers at 6ohms?

Going to be for near field use, running some budget priced bookshelves on my computer desk. A lot of them though are spec'd at 6 ohms, including the Dayton 642 I see people running with this. Will 6 ohm run alright on the Sat plugs?

We do not recommend any load lower than 8 ohms for this amplifier. While it may be possible, it is not something that can be covered under warranty should a problem arise.

3 ohm load

I have (2) 6 ohm sub in a small cabinet. Can I wire them as a 3 ohm's ? I understand wiring for 6 ohms would be over the 4 ohm limit for the amp plate. I assume yes; but you know about assume.Thanks

Unfortunately no, this amp will not handle anything lower than a 4 ohm nominal load. A 3 ohm load will likely dip to 2.5 ohms depending on frequency which would not be safe for the amplifier.

Reuse old Blaupunkt car speakers as satellite drivers?

I would love to reuse some old 4 ohm Blaupunkt car audio speakers (70w Peak, 35w RMS) along with a new Dayton 8” or Tang Band 6” subwoofer in a new custom wooden box (for deck or garage use). Can I use the 4 ohm car speakers even though the recommended impedance is 8 ohm for the Satellite Amplifier? I am willing to risk blowing the speakers, but would prefer not to damage the amplifier. I do not intend to play at loud levels.

Unfortunately I would not recommend hoooking a 4 ohm load up to the satellite outputs, this could damage the amplifier and void any warranty.

Will I be able to connect a BT-1A Bluetooth Receiver Module to the Line In internally?

I'm attempting a BOOMBOX project with the power cord being the only cable.One sub,two tweets,two mids,and this amp. Any advice would be greatly appreciated since this is my first project. I'm planing to use the belkin to power the BT-1A.

This amplifier is designed to be mounted in the subwoofer enclosure, so the subwoofer connections are on the opposite side of the amplifier than the connections and controls. The subwoofer connection is a red and black cable.

What amplifier IC topology drives the 3 channels for class D?

If understanding you correctly MOSFETS...The structure of a class D power stage is essentially identical to that of a synchronously rectified buck converter, a type of non-isolated switched-mode power supply. Whereas buck converters usually function as voltage regulators, delivering a constant DC voltage into a variable load and can only source current (one-quadrant operation), a class D amplifier delivers a constantly changing voltage into a fixed load, where current and voltage can independently change sign (four-quadrant operation). A switching amplifier must not be confused with any amplifier that uses an SMPS. A switching amplifier may use any type of power supply but the amplification process itself operates by switching.Theoretical power efficiency of class D amplifiers is 100%. That is to say, all of the power supplied to it is delivered to the load, none is turned to heat. This is because an ideal switch in its on state will conduct all current but has no voltage across it, hence no heat is dissipated. And when it is off, it will have the full supply voltage standing across it, but no current flows through it. Again, no heat is dissipated. Real-life power MOSFETs are not ideal switches, but practical efficiencies well over 90% are common. By contrast, linear AB-class amplifiers are always operated with both current flowing through and voltage standing across the power devices. An ideal class B amplifier has a theoretical maximum efficiency of 78%.

Which enclosure can I use with this? I've looked through the Dayton enclosures and didn't see anything that would be appropriate for this amp.

The enclosures we offer are for speakers although part number 300-7062 is a very close match in size, you will simply need to cut the opening to mount the amplifier.

High pass filter.

Why does this unit have both a built in 150hz satellite filter and a low pass filter?Wouldn't the high pass filter make the low pass filter pretty useless?I think I'd have this unit right now if it only had one 12db adjustable filter and was 4ohm stable.

The high pass filter is a fixed filter. It is similar to what is found on many subwoofer amplifers. Some adjustment of the subs frequency is typically necessary because in the room the actual frequency response can vary some, and some tweaking of the low crossover is generally needed to get the best blend between the subwoofer and satellites.

Are the satellites filtered too?

I see there's a variable low pass filter for the sub, are the satellites high pass filtered to compliment this so that the subwoofer and satellite woofer aren't doubling output at the top of the subwoofer range? i.e. standard subwoofer crossover setup.

What other ohm loads can the sattelites be?

I have the sattelites from a Klipsch ProMedia 4.1 setup (sadly the sub/amp was destroyed), and I plan to connect them in series to the satellite channels. In series they measure 11 Ohms, and currently run fine on a Lepai 2020 Amp. Will they work just as well on this amp? The reason to switch from the lepai is that these speakers cant really handle anything below 120hz or so, meaning I need a sub.

Remote Volume Control?

Is there a remote volume control for this amp? Usually I have the sub on the floor under my desk and the volume control is on a cable and sits on my desk.

For this amp, no...Check the cord you have, if it has jacks that are compatible it should work. This is just a passive volume knob common since the eighties... To set it up properly, turn the volume on the wire up all the way, then turn up the satellites until they are as loud as you will most likely ever want them. Next turn up the subwoofer until its nicely blended with the satellites. Now the volume knob on your wire will control both within your preferred listening range.Why would you need it though? If your source is the computer then use the volume control in your OS. Most of the media players available also let you set your mouse wheel to the volume when the player is focused. The same goes for your Ipod, or any other mp3 player or TV, just use the on board volume control.The only time this would really become a problem is if your source was a CD player with no volume control. If this is the case then a remote pre-amp could be used. Anything with a power supply and a volume knob could be used. PE sells the Behringer unit, it is overkill with three too many channels, but with a few adapters could be pressed into service for a reasonable price.If you are the type to muck about some then the Velleman kit is lots of fun for a decent price as well. For about $75 you can have your cake and eat it too. You will get a nice little box to sit on your desk, it will have volume control as well as Bass and Treble knobs!!! It is pricier and you need to get the metal Hammond box, power supply and do some soldering also.
