Dayton Audio MA1240a Multi-Zone 12 Channel Amplifier

The Dayton Audio MA1240a features a Class-AB output circuit that delivers superior audiophile sound quality and stable performance. Each of your installation's zones can benefit from the MA1240a's clean audio reproduction and exceptional functionality. The MA1240a can be stacked with other audio components and includes removable ears for mounting in standard audio racks (2RU).

Two common or BUS inputs feed audio signals from standard line-level audio sources to any or all channels. Each of the twelve channels has its own dedicated input and independent level adjustment to provide further flexibility. By simply flipping a single switch, two channels can be bridged to increase the total power output for that zone. This is helpful when extra power is needed in certain areas.

The MA1240a's manual, automatic on/off, or triggered 12V input turn-on modes facilitate easy integration into automated systems. For quick and easy troubleshooting of the system, each pair of channels or zones has a bi-color LED to indicate its operational status.

Specifications: • Rated power output per channel: 40 watts into 8 ohms, 60 watts into 4 ohms (0.09% THD) • Bridged output: 80 watts into 8 ohms (0.30% THD) • Signal to noise ratio: 95 dB A-weighted • Input impedance: 18K ohms • Input sensitivity: 380 mV • Frequency response: 5 Hz - 20 kHz • Channel crosstalk: 80 dB • Dimensions: 16.7" W x 4" H x 14.25" D (tabletop configuration) • Power requirements: 115/230 VAC, 50/60 Hz • Stand-by power rating: 115V, 0.264W • Weight: 30 lbs.

Dayton Audio MA1240a Multi-Zone 12 Channel Amplifier
Dayton Audio MA1240a Multi-Zone 12 Channel Amplifier is rated 4.7222 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good multi-zone amp for the price.I needed to expand my whole home system to several additional zones. Originally tried the Sherwood RX-5502, which had essentially 4 additional zones (8 channels). That thing was garbage and I don't recommend it. I decided to try the MA1240A and am very pleased. All of my additional zones have more punch than what I had using the RX-5502. There's no reduced volume or concerns with overheating. I love the fact that the unit has the auto-off and bridging capabilities too. I highly recommend this unit for expanding audio zones.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great PriceI recently purchased this product to drive 16 speakers spead equally accross 4 zones in my new house which under construction. When I compared the features to the competition, I ws convinced this product will perform equally or better at a much lower price. Additionally this unit was smaller in size and will fit nicley in the custom cabinets being built.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Multi Zone SoulutionI Purchased this Amp over Two Years ago and run it with two Channels Bridged for a total of Ten Channels that run Five Zones of Sonos Audio Distribution in my home. It is a perfect Amp for this purpose, although I have never really driven it to it's potiential, as rarely do I have more than three zones on at any one time. For Whole House Audio, it does very well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent productI bought this amp because I have speakers in multiple rooms in my house and my previous amp just wasn't doing the job. I had all 8 speakers tied into one channel on my old amp. Not enough power. This product is perfect for my needs. I have each speaker wired into a separate 40W channel and there is plenty of power without distortion. I even have room for 2 more pairs of speakers. The unit does get warm so make sure it has ventilation. The only negative is that I wish it came with a remote. I run everything through a RF universal remote and would like to be able to turn the unit on and off in sequence with my other components. Oh well, I can live with doing it manually.Overall great product.

The manual claims 8 ohms is required for bridged mode, but unbridged will it accept a 4 ohm load?

Asked by: RobL
Yep, seems that way.

Following on with the Sonos...Can I use 2 Sonos pre-amps to control 6 speakers each through an A bus and B bus set-up?

One pre-amp controls speakers 1-6, and the second pre-amp controls speakers 7-12.
Asked by: Colt45sag94
Yes, however, yuo will have the same volume to all rooms on that bus. There is a volume "tweak" knob for each zone on the back of the amp, but its not enough to custom set the volume levels per room. If all 6 speakers are in one type of room, then you should be fine.

How cani make this run 4 audio zones prewired?

Built my house with 4 zones audio. Basically 4sets of 2speakers each inits own room. All these arein ceiling and run to my racking he basement. Would this unit allow me to connect these speakers and what controller would work? I want to have control through wifi or network via iPod.
Asked by: RyanDlor
Squeezebox or Sonos would work fine for control over the network via iDevices or SmartPhones. The amp has 2 Bus (main) inputs and each zone also has an optional input. You can set each zone individually to use Bus 1, Bus2, or there own individual input. One Squeezebox or Sonos could provide input for your entire house, or you could get multiples if you wanted to play different music in different places.

Does this amp have muting relays?

Does it have any pops or thumps when powering up or down? If there are any upstream, does it have muting relays cutting out the signal when powering up, and avoiding thumps when powering down? Considering this amp for active speakers.
Asked by: Paul Spencer
No, this product does not feature any muting relays or "soft-on/off" circuitry. That being said, I'm not aware of any issues with "pops" or "thumps" on powering up or down.

Will a input device, such as sonos, turn this on and adjust volume?

Asked by: Timothy
As long as the Sonos system has a pre-amplified output, it can be used to control the volume of this amplifier. If you set the power switch on the back to auto, you can use the signal from the Sonos to turn the amplifier on and off.

Can this product be "daisy chained" in order to provide up to 24 channels?

Asked by: gumby46
Sure can. Use the "BUS" RCA line-level I/O jacks to the left-rear, according to the manual located under the price box on the product page.
