Product Details

Dayton Audio MA1240a Multi-Zone 12 Channel Amplifier

The Dayton Audio MA1240a features a Class-AB output circuit that delivers superior audiophile sound quality and stable performance. Each of your installation's zones can benefit from the MA1240a's clean audio reproduction and exceptional functionality. The MA1240a can be stacked with other audio components and includes removable ears for mounting in standard audio racks (2RU).

Two common or BUS inputs feed audio signals from standard line-level audio sources to any or all channels. Each of the twelve channels has its own dedicated input and independent level adjustment to provide further flexibility. By simply flipping a single switch, two channels can be bridged to increase the total power output for that zone. This is helpful when extra power is needed in certain areas.

The MA1240a's manual, automatic on/off, or triggered 12V input turn-on modes facilitate easy integration into automated systems. For quick and easy troubleshooting of the system, each pair of channels or zones has a bi-color LED to indicate its operational status.

Specifications: • Rated power output per channel: 40 watts into 8 ohms, 60 watts into 4 ohms (0.09% THD) • Bridged output: 80 watts into 8 ohms (0.30% THD) • Signal to noise ratio: 105 dB A-weighted • Input impedance: 18K ohms • Input sensitivity: 380 mV • Frequency response: 5 Hz - 72 kHz • Channel crosstalk: 80 dB • Dimensions: 16.7" W x 4" H x 14.25" D (tabletop configuration) • Power requirements: 115/230 VAC, 60/50 Hz • Stand-by power rating: 115V, 0.264W • Weight: 38 lbs.

Dayton Audio MA1240a Multi-Zone 12 Channel Amplifier
Dayton Audio MA1240a Multi-Zone 12 Channel Amplifier is rated 4.7619 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great so farDoes what it says. I have it in a large cabinet with plenty of room above and to the side and it does not seem hot at all when running every channel. I installed it so that I see the rear of the device when I open cabinet, so that I can adjust volume, input etc.. easily. Using this auto function means I never need to use front of unit anyway.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for whole house sound systems.Got this after running whole house on a cheap Sony regular stereo head for a long time. This one is much better and appropriate since has nicely separated channels with optional switch controlled bridging and individual gain (volume) controls for each speaker. We had one minor issue, the unit had no output on initial hookup. I called Eric at ext 111 and he asked me to look at a small plug inside the unit that sometimes comes off during shipping. It was unplugged, and after plugging it in the unit worked perfectly. We've been enjoying the excellent power and sound quality since.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good multi-zone amp for the price.I needed to expand my whole home system to several additional zones. Originally tried the Sherwood RX-5502, which had essentially 4 additional zones (8 channels). That thing was garbage and I don't recommend it. I decided to try the MA1240A and am very pleased. All of my additional zones have more punch than what I had using the RX-5502. There's no reduced volume or concerns with overheating. I love the fact that the unit has the auto-off and bridging capabilities too. I highly recommend this unit for expanding audio zones.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great PriceI recently purchased this product to drive 16 speakers spead equally accross 4 zones in my new house which under construction. When I compared the features to the competition, I ws convinced this product will perform equally or better at a much lower price. Additionally this unit was smaller in size and will fit nicley in the custom cabinets being built.

What is the maximum wire gauge I can use? Can I use 12 or 14 gauge speaker wire or it want accept anything larger than 16?

Asked by: wsap01
These should accept 14 gauge wire without a problem, 12 will probably be a pretty tight fit.

I just purchased the MA1240. I have five rooms with two speakers each along with a volume control knob in each room. Can I use Airport expresses to stream music into each room?

Asked by: B Webb
Yes. You can use the analog output of the airport express and connect it to bus 1 or bus 2 of the MA1240.

For a whole house speaker system. I would like to have 11-12 pair of speakers, each pair would have its own wall volume controller. Can I wire two pair of speakers (2 volume controllers) to each of the outputs on a MA 1240a amp?

Asked by: craigf
Yes, as long as each set of output channels does not have a heavier load than 4 ohms plugged into it.

Is this unit powerful enough to pwer a CD player (with no volume control) or would I need a pre-amp?

Asked by: siberian
I got two conflicting replies from Parts Express Techs. One the phone a Tech replied that the built-in volume controls would be fine to handle a CD player. Prior to finding the 1-800 number I posted the question and got a reply from Matt who said it's supposed to work with a pre-amp. I ordered the unit prior to getting Matt's reply. Now I wonder if I should cancel the order as I don't want to invest in a pre-amp.
