The highly successful Dayton Audio WT3 speaker tester has now outgrown its name! DATS, the Dayton Audio Test System, is the proud successor to the WT3, includes everything WT3 users have come to love about that system—but adds much more. Don't worry, the new system still measures loudspeaker parameters or R, L, and C values in just seconds and still includes the WT3's unique Rub and Buzz test. But now with the introduction of DATS, the system has grown beyond impedance testing and T/S measurements to include a second test mode featuring a general purpose signal generator and oscilloscope working in tandem.

The scope and generator combination provides a powerful general purpose audio test set. When used with the DATS hardware, the oscilloscope monitors the DATS generator output and is calibrated. When standard audio interfaces are available, the oscilloscope input can be switched to another device to allow the monitoring of arbitrary input signals in addition to the DATS generator output.

DATS provides the following improvements over WT3:

  • New signal generator with selectable waveform, frequency, and amplitude
  • Sine, square, triangle, saw tooth, impulse, pink noise, and log sweeps
  • New oscilloscope with dual traces and adjustable time and amplitude scales
  • Oscilloscope and generator compatible with other audio interfaces
  • Improved audio device selection dialogue
  • Improved alligator clip leads provide a more consistent test lead impedance
  • New method for calculating Vas from specified Mmd
  • Faster hardware startup time (reduced from 90 seconds to 30 seconds)

DATS measures over 30,000 data points in just a few seconds using a new swept sine technique. The result is a very high-resolution impedance measurement that allows the extraction of an extremely accurate driver parameter set, suitable for the most critical loudspeaker design work.

Free air parameters are measured in just a few seconds. Vas can be measured by traditional test box, added mass, SPL, or calculated from the driver's specified Mmd. No other impedance tester is as fast, versatile, or as easy to use as DATS.

DATS hardware consists of a compact USB interface unit with attached USB cable and alligator clip leads. It's manufactured on state-of-the-art equipment using precision surface mount components. Windows compatible software provides an easy-to-use interface that allows you to be up and running very quickly. You can save as many as 20 impedance measurements per project and then overlay and compare any or all of the measurements to create a custom report complete with all your notes. Perfect for quick incoming QC inspections.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dayton Audio DATS Test SystemI just recently got back into speaker building and decided to do it with some knowledge, and actually testing speakers for resonance, etc. That was a good exercise for sure. I decided that I should try this product as it promised to make the process very easy. Well, I have only gotten to the first screen, and am having so much fun with it, I consider it already paid for. Testing all the old speakers in my tickle trunk, can actually make use of them now. Takes three seconds to do a complete test, print out, stuff it into the cage of the speakers. This thing is stupid easy to use, prompts are perfect, what more can I say, a must for any speaker builder that wants to have good information to plug into a design program, even the free ones.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A vital tool for the speaker builder.I've owned the original version of the Woofer Tester for a number of years and recently upgraded to the new DATS version. One of the most frustrating aspects of speakerbuilding is trying to design a system based on the published Thiele-Small specifications provided the manufacturer. They rarely are the same and can be off as much as30% . With the DATS system, accurate TS specs can be easily be determined. Thesoftware is easy to use and the added features of measuring inductance, capacitance, and resistance, is of great use in designing crossovers and other electronic circuitry.If you are really serious about speaker building, you need a DATS measuring system.

Maybe I just can't find it... but does the DATS not measure BL?

I'm extremely happy with this package and use it all the time, but it would be nice to have a BL number (either tesla-meters or NA) to help me determine excursion when I model subwoofers I build. I have looked at past products and the WT2 measures BL... but I'm not sure if this spec was dropped when the system got upgraded to DATS.

Yes, DATS measures BL along with a number of other parameters that are not displayed on the main screen. You have to open the "Driver Editor" to see these parameters. See the "Edit" menu. I have attached a screen shot showing the Driver Editor pages.

How do you get the calibration under one ohm?

I can't get past the test lead calibration after several tries, each time going to restore default before trying again. Frustrating!

I have the same issue. Oddly enough, it works perfectly under Linux with Wine. I believe the issue is with Windows sound subsystem doing volume adjustment, but I haven't spent enough time with it to fully find an answer.

Can't access White Noise Mode

I can see the button for White Noise, but it is not active and does not function. All other generator modes function and are active. I have the new version of this program, DATS, and it says it should be working. What am I doing wrong?

The button is present in my version, V. 1.0.1, as I describe.Regardless of your assessment of the value of white noise, which I disagree strongly with, the DATS documentation says white noise is an active function.Please, someone with real knowledge of DATS, why does it not function??

Pasive Crossover Testing

Can we do passive crossover testing with DATS.

Sort of. One way do doing it would be to hook a load up to one output and not the other, and watch the impedance curve. Another way would be to use DATS as a driver, and hook the outputs (with loads) to the line-in socket on your computer and run a response plot with TrueRTA (included) or HolmImpulse.This will require, though, that the input to the computer be isolated, as I'm not sure how the negative terminal on the DATS may be connected to ground.

V(as) is inconsistent with different added mass samples.

Am I doing something wrong? I did two tests and the V(as) was 11.31 and 19.95 which seems too varied as well as M(ms) of 484.9 and 275. The Any ideas appreciated. Thanks.The speaker is a Pyle PDW21250 - I asked Pyle for cabinet recommendations and they did not have any. They pointed me to your Q&A pages :) Thanks in advance..

VAS is one of the trickiest parameters to measure. It is also subject to atmospheric pressures. It deals with compressed air into a cupic ft.Using all of a speakers parameters are helpful in determining box size. Vas alone willnot do it. It is not uncommon for various measurements if made on different days.

Clamp the driver in place? what?

Directions specify to "clamp the driver in place" for testing. Is there a recommendation for this? Other measurement methods I've seen recommend suspending the driver in free air. Obviously, nothing blocking the vents or front cone area would be good. Perhaps mounting in a cabinet with removable back (and removing the back)? Or a baffle with speaker cut out but no enclosure? How critical is this? (i.e., must do over suspension method, must have baffle of certain size, etc.)

For the initial sweep, you need the basket of the driver to not move while testing. If the driver weighs more than a few pounds, it'll do that by itself just by setting it on it's magnet. If not, press it down on a hard surface by the basket and it'll work fine (only takes a few seconds).For the second sweep, if you're using the box-of-known-volume method, the driver needs to be sealed to the box. You can do so by setting the face of the driver on the box (if it has a front gasket) and pressing down hard while running the sweep. Screwing the driver down would be better, but that takes quite a while, especially for a test that only takes a few seconds.
