Dayton Audio 18" Reference Series HO Subwoofer and Cabinet Package

Buy this 4.0 cubic foot knock-down cabinet together with the Dayton Audio RSS490HO-4 18" subwoofer and save half off the original price of the cabinet. That's a savings of $75!

About the Cabinet

This particular cabinet is designed specifically for the Dayton Audio 18" Reference Series High Output subwoofer, but works for any subwoofer with an overall diameter of 18-3/16" or less, and a cutout requirement of 16-3/4" or less. The sealed enclosure design creates a subwoofer system with a Qtc of 0.644 and an f3 of 40 Hz when used with the Dayton Audio RSS460HO-4 and minimal fill. Adding five pounds of Acousta-Stuf will create a critically damped subwoofer system.

During the CNC manufacturing process, rabbets dadoes are cut into the back panel for precise panel alignment. A unique two-piece brace adds superior rigidity without affecting the subwoofer's performance. Both side panels feature 3/4" rabbeted extensions with recesses to perfectly install the first piece of the two-part, double thick baffle. Plate amplifier installation is made easy by following the scribed interior guide with a jig saw and by modifying one of the braces.

The end result is a resonance-free, sealed subwoofer cabinet that is purpose-built to extract the best performance from Dayton Audio's 18" High Output Reference Series subwoofer. All that's left to do is finish it to match your décor or paint it to stand out. When your friends ask about it, you get the pleasure of saying, "I built it myself!"

Specifications: • Panel thickness: 3/4", front baffle is 1-1/2" • Panel material: Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) • Finished net cabinet volume (subtracting the double thick baffle and bracing): 4.0 cubic feet • External dimensions: 20" H x 23" W x 20.75" D • Subwoofer recess: 1/2" • Weight: 62 lbs. • Made in the U.S.A.

About the Subwoofer

The Dayton Audio Reference Series subwoofers take the quality and performance of the much acclaimed RS line into the subwoofer realm. As with the rest of the Reference Series, the main focus of these subwoofers is ultra-low-distortion. Second, third, and intemodulation distortion are kept extremely low by utilizing three short-circuit paths within the motor structure.

A durable aramid fiber spider and extensive venting throughout provide quiet and uniform excursion. The black anodized cone, rubber surround, and custom basket give this driver a unique, high-end look.

Dayton Audio 18" Reference Series HO Subwoofer and Cabinet Package
Dayton Audio 18" Reference Series HO Subwoofer and Cabinet Package is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice. And heavy.I bought this as an upgrade from the 12" reference series powered sub from P-E, which is a very clean sub. I like how it sounds, even though I don't have it 'dialed in' yet. I will be using this with the P-E TriTrix speakers in a tri-amped configuration with this one mono sub, a Behringer 2496 digital x-over and some Crown DC300a amps for hi-mid and a McIntosh MC2200 in mono mode for the sub. (I eventually hope to upgrade to the Sure IR 250 class-D modules for power). The box pieces fit together almost perfectly thanks to the CNC precision cuts. I quickly ran out of gluing clamps and improvised a strap clamp. This box takes a lot of glue, and it has to be applied and fitted quickly before it begins to dry. I used Gorilla Wood Glue.I was disappointed that the front baffle is not a one-piece 1.5" baffle, but is actually 2 x 3/4" pieces that have to be glued together. That's a lot of surface area to glue and clamp in a hurry. The glue began drying before I could get everything properly coated, and so my baffle has some minute gaps between the 2 layers, but it seems to be solid and rattle-free. I wish this kit had screws like the TriTrix kit. That would make it easier to assemble and glue, and reduces the need for clamps. I'm not a woodworker, but I managed.Mounting holes for the 18" driver have to land where there is no interference from the internal braces, leaving room for a T-nut at all 8 positions. A couple of test fits and a pencil took care of this. I used Scotch 77 Spray Mount for the fiber filling. I drilled a 1/4" hole for a 14-guage cable in the middle of the back plate.I am currently powering this with one channel of a Crown DC300a and it really kicks. When I play some of my home studio recordings through it I can feel and hear the accidental footsteps that were recorded along with acoustic guitar. Very realistic. No rattles or whistles or anything but clean and full low end. I like it and I am glad I bought it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AwesomeI love the clean tight bass of sealed subs. So far I've only tested this sub with an Alpine V-12 car amp hooked up to a 300W power supply and even at 300W I was impressed. It drops off down low but that will be easily corrected with some EQ adjustments. I plan to buy another one and run 800W to each from a Crown XTi 2002.

Dayton Audio 18" Reference Series HO Subwoofer and Cabinet Package

Does this package include all hardware to secure the sub to the box? Also, do you recommend a sealant behind the lip of the sub?

Asked by: JimCan
Unfortunately this does not include mounting hardware so one of our cast frame driver mounting kits is recommended. There is a gasket pre-installed on the frame of the woofer so an additional gasket is not necessary.

Has anyone tried to port this box? Would that work with this size box?

Asked by: JimCan
Jim, this box is way to small to port. I found some info on another forum indicating a box at least twice the size of this sealed enclosure.This is the optimal alignment for this driver.Name: Dayton Audio RSS460HO-4 18"Type: Standard one-way driverCompany: Dayton AudioNo. of Drivers = 1Fs = 19.6 HzQms = 3.9Vas = 297.9 litersCms = 0.26 mm/NMms = 425.9 gRms = 8.008 kg/sXmax = 12.75 mmXmech = 19.13 mmP-Dia = 338.2 mmSd = 1164 sq.cmP-Vd = 1.145 litersQes = 0.43Re = 3.41 ohmsLe = 2.1 mHZ = 4 ohmsBL = 20.4 TmPe = 900 wattsQts = 0.39no = 0.503 %1-W SPL = 89.2 dB2.83-V SPL = 92.87 dB-----------------------------------------Box PropertiesName:Type: Vented BoxShape: Prism, square (optimum)Vb = 7.672 cu.ftFb = 19.05 HzQL = 5.549F3 = 22.48 HzFill = minimalNo. of Vents = 1Vent shape = rectangleVent ends = one flushHv = 3 inWv = 14 inLv = 37.29 inThat gives you a F3 of 22.5 Hz. With 900 watts you achieve and spl. of 120db. At 18 Hz it is 7 db down for an spl of 113db.Vent velocity is 17 m/sec.The biggest problem is that the cabinet is quite large, and when you add driver, vent and bracing you will be around 10 cu.ft.

how much acousta stuf?

the description states 5lbs for a critically damped subwoofer system but how would the system behave with zero Acousta Stuf? What are the benefits to having the system at a critically damped stage?
Asked by: 1883atlantics
Stuffing density in a sealed box is open to experimentation. It has a small effect, similar to adding up to 10% additional box volume. I would start with two pounds of stuffing and see if you notice a difference with each additional pound. If you don't notice a difference, then it is not critical to your application to have the exact right amount of stuffing. Adjusting the amount of stuffing can help tailor the bass damping to your room and placement, so it's a good idea to get the sub in its final location before you adjust stuffing.

Compared to 2 of the 15" kits.

I currently have a sub 120 for my HT and want more. I have a large room and was considering an IB system but for various reasons decided not to.Would you reccomend one of these with a Crown xls bridged or 2 of the 15HO kits with same amp?
Asked by: DougM57
I always recommend two subs over one. You will have more output and better room placement options available which means more headroom and smoother overall response.

Does adding the SPA 1000 change performance

Will adding the SPA1000 plate amp to the back of this kit effect the performance or would it be better to use an external amp like the Dayton Audio SA1000
Asked by: leetbuilder
Adding the plate amplifier will reduce the internal volume by about 0.2 cubic feet which is very minimal. This will not cause an audible difference in output or low frequencies.

Output compared with Dayton Audio RS1202K

How would the output (SPL at low frequencies) of this package compare with the Dayton Audio RS1202K?
Asked by: Stephen P.
Based on the specifications of the drivers used in each sub, the RS1202K sub and RSS460HO-4/cabinet kit will be evenly matched for output (the dual RSS315HFA-8 config has only 1dB extra sensitivity over the RSS460HO-4), but the 18" driver has a lower Fs and in a typical room will seem to play lower. This is supposing that you use the SPA1000 plate amplifier for the RSS460HO-4/cabinet kit.
