About the Cabinet

This particular cabinet is designed specifically for the Dayton Audio 15" Ultimax subwoofer, but works for any subwoofer with an overall diameter of 15-3/8" or less, and a cutout requirement of 14" or less. For optimum performance with the Ultimax 15" subwoofer, add three pounds of Acousta-Stuf polyfill for a Qtc of 0.707 and an f3 of 35 Hz.

During the CNC manufacturing process, rabbets and dadoes are cut into the back panel for precise panel alignment. A unique two-piece brace adds superior rigidity without affecting the subwoofer's performance. Both side panels feature 3/4" rabbeted extensions with recesses to perfectly install the first piece of the two-part, double thick baffle. Plate amplifier installation is made easy by following the scribed interior guide with a jig saw and by modifying one of the braces.

The end result is a resonance-free, sealed subwoofer cabinet that is purpose-built to extract the best performance from Dayton Audio's 15" Ultimax subwoofer. All that's left to do is finish it to match your décor or paint it to stand out. When your friends ask about it, you get the pleasure of saying, "I built it myself!"

Specifications: • Panel thickness: 3/4", front baffle is 1-1/2" • Panel material: Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) • Finished net cabinet volume (subtracting the double thick baffle, bracing, and woofer volume): 3.0 cubic feet • External dimensions: 19.25" H x 19.25" W x 20" D • Subwoofer recess: 7/16" • Weight: 52 lbs. • Made in the U.S.A.

About the Subwoofer

The Ultimax Series of dual voice coil subwoofers, from Dayton Audio, are not for the faint of heart. Built using the latest in subwoofer technology, Ultimax subwoofers are the pinnacle of low frequency driver design. An Ultimax subwoofer tests the strength of your foundation with fast, articulate, gut-wrenching bass.

Dual 2 ohm voice coils allow for stereo 2 ohm and mono 1 ohm wiring configurations when connecting to high current car audio and professional audio amplifiers to extract maximum power. For home audio applications, simply wire the voice coils in series for a benign 4 ohm load for greater amplifier compatibility.

To improve power handling, increase thermal management, and reduce power compression, Dayton Audio designed the Ultimax Series with large black anodized formers and vented pole pieces, under-spider ventilation, and two-layer copper voice coils.

Over 1-1/2" of travel (3/4" Xmax) is kept completely linear through the use of dual spiders that also limit distortion and rocking modes. "Tall-boy" rubber surrounds with integrated gaskets maintain driver surface area during extreme excursion moments. Thick, one-piece Nomex honeycomb covered cones are covered with woven, heavy-duty glass fibers creating ultra-still cones that resist deformation.

A large copper sleeve and copper pole cap in the motor reduce energy storage from inductance, with the side benefit of lowering distortion for "faster" response. Large dual-stacked, high-energy magnets handle the heavy lifting and bring Qts down to a level where Ultimax subwoofers can be used in vented or sealed cabinets and enclosures.

Specifications: • Power handling: 800 watts RMS/1,600 watts max • Le: 1.31 mH • Impedance: 4 ohms  (2 ohms/coil) • Re: 3.4 ohms • Frequency range: 15-1,500 Hz • Fs: 19.5 Hz • SPL: 89.5 dB 2.83V/1m • Vas 7.92 cu. ft. • Qms: 2.4 • Qes: 0.59 • Qts: 0.47 • Xmax: 19 mm • Dimensions: Overall diameter: 15.28", Cutout: 13.78", Depth: 7.55".

Note: All parameters derived with voice coils wired in series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wife friendly subs!I started this journey out looking at svs subs but just couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of money. I stumbled across this kit and thought this would be a money saving and fun way to get the sound I was wanting in a home theater system. I ordered the two heaven! which arrived at my doorstep two days later. The drivers are much better built than I could have ever imagined! They are beasts! I glued and screwed the cabinets together because I've read of horror stories of glue eventually coming loose. The cabinets fit together perfectly and probably took me about 2 hours to assemble each cabinet. My wife looked at the cabinet and told me they were alot bigger than she expected so I decided to make them into something more wife freindly. Her and i both love old vintage style decor so I made them look like old apple crates. She loves them and i get dual 15 inch subs so we're both happy! The suboofer i had before these was an insignia 120 watt 10" sub which didnt sound that well. These dual subs mop the floor with that sub! These have a very clean, articualte sound to them! I paired them with two crown xls 1502 amps and they are a match made in heaven! Thank you PE for this great kit! After spending 50 hours finishing these cabinets I would say I would definitely go the diy route again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I built a dual subwoofer cabinet from this kit.I ordered two of these kits, and used a sheet of 3/4 MDF to combine them into a dual 15" cabinet. The cabinet is 1.5" thick of MDF, and weighs a ton. Very solid and stiff. I did not really get a chance to play it yet, but I'm sure it will sound great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Musical and PowerfulVery pleased, I was hoping for but not expecting a musical delivery from such a powerful speaker. It is accurate, tight and sounds good at all levels for classical and classic rock. No boominess = Win! Driving with a Behringer EP4000 amp. Only regret is that I purchased just one, will buy an additional one soon. :-)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything fits perfectlyWell done cabnet, everything is cut perfectly. Subwoofer hits really hard with my Crown 1100 watt amp, shakes the front door, and moves pictures on the wall. Just about the perfect amount of Bass :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great subwoofer for Home Theater and MusicI ordered the 15" Ultimax Sub and Cabinet package as an upgrade for my home theater. And what an upgrade it is.First things first: The ordering process and support while I was researching this product was top notch. I used the live chat to ask a few questions. The tech that I spoke to had all the answers I needed and made sure that I had a list of everything I needed. My order was placed on a thursday morning the week before Christmas. My packages were delivered on the following Monday, allowing me 3 days to build before Christmas.Unpackaging the components, I noticed how well everything was packed. And the driver is HEAVY. Its a beast. Everything about this driver screams quality. The cabinet pieces are nice solid HDF (maybe MDF), I dont know the difference. But it is 3/4" and everyting fits together with minimal work. I was able to glue and clamp it together in a couple hours and let it sit overnight before finishing it.My home theater room is approximately 16' wide by 24' long. I had been using a Mirage 310 subwoofer (10" 300watt). It was great in my old listening space, but when put into the home theater, it left something to be desired. I now have the Ultimax 15 powered by one channel of a Behringer NU3000. I am soon going to order a second Ultimax 15 and run two of these in my HT.Sound quality: Not only does this configuration produce huge bass, it does so with quality. My goal was clean hard hitting bass for movies and some use for music. I ended up with a subwoofer that produces great sound in movies. But i find myself in the room laying on the couch enjoying music alot more than I used to.I listen to alot of older rock (Pink Floyd, Zepplin, the Who, etc...) But to test the setup, I threw on a couple base heavy tracks from the Beastie Boys. It handled everything with ease and no distortion, even when I turned it up unreasonably loud. Pink Floyd and AC/DC can give the sub a workout, but I wanted to see how musical this would be. I brought up some Yo-Yo Ma, and symphony music. I was amazed at the tone brought to the music. I switched between my old sub and the new one during multiple songs. Not only did I hear notes I never knew were there, I could actually hear vibrato created by the bow on the strings. Simply amazing.I cant say enough about this subwoofer and Parts Express. If you are considering this product, buy it! You wont regret it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than Epik Empire, very impressed!I never review products, but has been such a good purchase I had to write one.First off the box kit was very well built and is super inert and very solid. It took me about 2 hours to put everything together. Unfortunately I didn't have clamps large enough so used wood glue and screws.Sound: this sub is precise. The Dayton has scary amounts of excursion, this is why it probably goes a lot lower than my Epik. I can continually get 12hz tones that shake everything in my home theater room. the mid bass is well rounded too, with no bloating. The only area that the Epik does slightly better in is the bass between 80-120 hz but that range of bass doesn't really matter to me since I have my cutoff frequency at 80 hzOverall I am astonished at the level of quality that Dayton has put into this driver. I am equally as impressed with Parts express and their level of service and price offering. Cant believe this came with free shipping !!If you are looking for a serious home theater sub and have never done a DIY project don't be afraid. This project is easy and the payoff is huge.Five stars !

Dayton Audio 15" Ultimax Subwoofer and Cabinet Bundle

Can anyone tell me from experience how low does this bundle go down to?

Asked by: Kailuastyle
Bass extension is really as much about the room and placement as the natural response of the driver is only part of the performance. Without factoring in the room this is 6 db down at 28Hz and 12 db down at 18 Hz. It doesn't have excursion issues at all so even deeper response is possible if set up properly.

I have a Dayton sa230 amp arriving . I was planning on using it to replace failed amp.Now thinking of building this. Would it drive the 15"sub musically in a medium sized room?

Asked by: Josephk
I think that the sa230 will do an excellent job of driving this system.

Will a crown xls1500 power two of these subs

Asked by: mattt
Yes, although the XLS 2502 would be a better choice. It never hurts to have headroom when it comes to subwoofers.

Is this sub to big for a small room? My room is 11' by 9' with a 8' ceiling. Or would the 12" be better. I will be running the sub with satellite speakers that go down to 150hz.

Asked by: blkac33
It will certainly be big enough and have plenty of headroom available. A 12" will work just as well in that space, so it really depends on how much output you are looking for.
