XLS Series with Integrated DriveCore™ Technology

The XLS Series of power amplifiers from Crown define the standard for live sound systems with unmatched performance, technology, and affordability. This high-performance line consists of four models each providing enormous power and flexibility thanks to the integrated DriveCore™ Technology, PureBand™ Crossover System and Peakx™ limiters. And weighing in at only 11 lbs. or less, they provide the ultimate in lightweight portability.

Integrated DriveCore™ Technology

Class D amplifiers are notable for extraordinarily high efficiency and being well suited for driving difficult reactive loads such as subwoofers. However, their performance can suffer impaired performance on marginal and unstable AC line supplies.

To overcome this obstacle, Crown engineers developed DriveCore™ Technology – a proprietary hybrid analog-digital integrated circuit (IC) developed with Texas Instruments that drives the "front end" of the Class D output stage. Over 60 years of Crown's design knowledge and experience went into the development of this technology resulting in truly remarkable benefits.

DriveCore™ Technology provides an extremely wide-tolerance with regards to sagging or "dirty" AC line conditions providing consistent performance without affecting audio quality. This means that your performance will not be compromised by fluctuating generator power or overloading by lighting rigs, backline gear, etc.

In addition, DriveCore™ Technology's patented feedback and PWM modulation circuits enable fast recovery on peak transients, accurate reproduction of low-level detail, and precise tracking of low-frequencies at high power levels for maximum subwoofer output.

Advanced Switched-Mode Power Supply

This advanced power supply is highly efficient and optimized for maximum power transfer from the AC line through the Class D output stage to the loudspeakers. A benefit to this is substantial weight reduction when compared to older 60 Hz transformer-based power supplies. All four models in the line weigh 11 pounds or less with no compromise in performance. This makes the XLS Series the benchmark for high performance lightweight portability.

PureBand™ Crossover System

The PureBand™ Crossover System in the XLS Series adds an enormous amount of flexibility and performance to any system. With this system, the crossover frequency is completely variable allowing the choice of any crossover point between 50 Hz and 3 kHz on 1/12 octave centers. The use of 4th order Linkwitz-Riley filters provides steep slopes for a seamless transition between high and low drivers. All of the PureBand™ Crossover System settings can be fully configured quickly and easily from the front panel using the intuitive LCD interface.

Reviews

Crown XLS 2500 DriveCore Series Power Amplifier
Crown XLS 2500 DriveCore Series Power Amplifier is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from BIG power... Little coin! This review is going be a bit different, since I don't DJ with my Crown.... It's in my home theater... Also, I did buy it from PE and had no issues at all.I've had my XLS-2500 for little over a year now running a JBL SRX-4719 cabinet (2 x 18s) in my home theater as the .1 channel...The crossover function is excellent and I use it as my only dividing network for my subs. Setup is super simple and takes about 5 minutes. Mine is running bridged @ 4 ohms, lowpass at 63hz... I'm currently running with the Peak-X limiters on, but for about 6 months I didn't.. I haven't noticed any difference, but I assume they're doing their job?To sum up the performance in a single phrase... "It's crazy"... I have routinely run this amp to point that the clipping lights are just flickering and 18s are going hard without an issue at all. Even at that output level the amplifier is cool and the fan cycles on and off (inaudibly... I can see it spinning through the front mesh and have paused the music and can't hear it all) and it just plays and plays. I have exploded the element in a brand new incandescent light bulb about 8' away from the sub cabinet. Last week, after about 9 months of abuse, I rattled both of the interior handles off of my upstairs exterior door deadbolts locks with this rig.Yes, it's that serious...It makes big power and will push big speakers like you can't imagine. It will also do this for hours at a time if you have speakers that can take it. 2-3 hours at that output level isn't uncommon for me.Moving past my above comments, I've also found it to be surprisingly powerful and controlled while listening at typical volumes. During most of my normal movie watching, the first pair of LEDs are just barely flickering, fading to on solid, and you can clearly feel the impacts of doors closing and other subtle details. When playing video games, impacts hit deep in your chest at the same, lazy, power level. If I want to put a scary movie in and freak the lady out, I crank it up and wait for her to jump out of her seat... That happens when the amp reaches less than 1/2 power based on the panel LEDs... It terrifies the snot out of her... LOTS of fun!Moving past my use of it as a subwoofer amp... I've piped it into my JBL L100T mains before and it was shockingly clean and detailed. Moving up from my lack-luster Pioneer AVR, it was an insane revelation of what power can really do. Snares were tight, horns were bright, and bass was hard and controlled. I really didn't expect that kind of performance out of class-D amp. I honestly sat in awe at performance for such an affordable amplifier... I've since moved on to a class A power amp on my mains (and yes, that technology sounds better than the XLS did for that job) but the XLS is within about 15% of my class A amp, to me anyhow. In summary, this is an excellent amplifier, period. If you want to DJ it out 5 nights a week, I'm confident it would do it. If you want an insane amp for your home theater, it will do that too. I'm just saving my pennies for another set of 18s and another XLS-2500 so I can take it from extremely insane to oblivion...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn't be happier! It looks like most people are buying the XLS series for PA purposes, so I thought I would take a minute to share my experiences with it in my home theater.First off, I didn't expect much from it in the way of sound quality. I'm a class D skeptic and bought it to run a sub cabinet with 2 2241H JBL 18s for my home theater.I got the amp about 2 weeks before I had the cabinet ready to roll, so for grins I looked up my JBL L100Ts to it... Wow.. It's amazingly graceful for an amp this powerful in this price range. Very clear, very detailed, and very clean. I was impressed with the sound, but still skeptical about the performance. My L100Ts are not "huge" speakers, but I was able to drive the amp to clipping with them. I didn't expect them to tolerate 440w/ea. So, I was readying myself for disappointment powering the 18s, but still enjoying having them on the L100Ts. In the worst possible case, I had an amp that sounds twice as expensive as it was.Last night, I hooked the subs up to the XLS, rewired for 4ohm bridged, and gave it a go... Holy #$@!... This thing puts out MONSTER power bridged mono into 4 ohms. The 2241H are rated at 1000W/ea, and as other reviewers have said on other sites, I couldn't drive the amp to clipping before audible distortion set in from overpowering the speakers. LOUD and HARD bass... Insanely impressive. So, I went from thinking I had a good bargain for a different application to jaw dropping awe at what this amp can do.At reasonable movie watching volume the T-Rex vs. Ford Explorer scene in Jurassic park is a great experience with the -20db indicator light just barely flickering on the amp. When going for broke with music that is very bass heavy (I'm not in the cheese and wine crowd... I was playing Eazy-E) this amp lays out power like you can't imagine. I'm confident that my sub cabinet was taking 2000w consistently and the cooling fan was lazying away, cycling on and off every once in awhile. The only complaints I have with it are the lack of banana plug-ins, 12v trigger, and no removable rack ears. That's why I gave it 4 stars for features. This amp is clearly not being marketing to the home crowd so I understand why Crown passed on those details. I will add that it SHOULD be marketed to the home crowd though. It's an outstanding value for anyone with a respectable rig.In short, if you want enough power into a 4ohm mono load to wake the dead 2 counties away, look no further. I'm totally satisfied with my purchase. It did a great job powering at stereo 8 ohm too, but that's not where it shines.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful & LightweightReplaced an older Crown Amp. This one is 1/4 the weight but still packs a great punch. Works great no complaints.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ridiculous!I bought this amp before Parts had it available but will again next time around. First, the sound. Tight, fast, very clean. Power. Unlimited. Cant find the bottom. It just goes on forever. Price, For the money, cant be beat. Weight, like it's not there. Value, I just don't think there is a better deal out there for the money. I have been dragging amps around for 30+ yrs and I don't think I'll look any further. I bought this for my sons DJ rack and I'm going to be borrowing it till I get a rackfull of these for myself. If your having trouble making an amp decision, look no further. This is it. Buy it. If you need more oomph, get 2. I love my QSC's but this makes a tough argument. Way to go Crown.

Where would be a good place to set the volume on this amp so I get great dynamics without clipping I want the edge. I am using it to power two um15-22's in a sealed enclosure. I thought if I turn it all the way up an control it with my receiver. It clips

Unfortunately there is no such thing as the best volume setting, this all has to be setup through gain structuring. Please contact our tech support for more help with this question, tech@parts-express.com or 800-338-0531 x1.

this amp at 4 ohms bridge-mono, can be powered  a 8 ohm speakers without the risk of burning the amplifier

Asked by: foguense
Yes this can power anything rated for 4 ohms or higher. The higher the impedance, the less output power you will get from the amplifier however. An 8 ohm load will only be about half the power as a 4 ohm.
