XLS Series with Integrated DriveCore™ Technology

The XLS Series of power amplifiers from Crown define the standard for live sound systems with unmatched performance, technology, and affordability. This high-performance line consists of four models each providing enormous power and flexibility thanks to the integrated DriveCore™ Technology, PureBand™ Crossover System and Peakx™ limiters. And weighing in at only 11 lbs. or less, they provide the ultimate in lightweight portability.

Integrated DriveCore™ Technology

Class D amplifiers are notable for extraordinarily high efficiency and being well suited for driving difficult reactive loads such as subwoofers. However, their performance can suffer impaired performance on marginal and unstable AC line supplies.

To overcome this obstacle, Crown engineers developed DriveCore™ Technology – a proprietary hybrid analog-digital integrated circuit (IC) developed with Texas Instruments that drives the "front end" of the Class D output stage. Over 60 years of Crown's design knowledge and experience went into the development of this technology resulting in truly remarkable benefits.

DriveCore™ Technology provides an extremely wide-tolerance with regards to sagging or "dirty" AC line conditions providing consistent performance without affecting audio quality. This means that your performance will not be compromised by fluctuating generator power or overloading by lighting rigs, backline gear, etc.

In addition, DriveCore™ Technology's patented feedback and PWM modulation circuits enable fast recovery on peak transients, accurate reproduction of low-level detail, and precise tracking of low-frequencies at high power levels for maximum subwoofer output.

Advanced Switched-Mode Power Supply

This advanced power supply is highly efficient and optimized for maximum power transfer from the AC line through the Class D output stage to the loudspeakers. A benefit to this is substantial weight reduction when compared to older 60 Hz transformer-based power supplies. All four models in the line weigh 11 pounds or less with no compromise in performance. This makes the XLS Series the benchmark for high performance lightweight portability.

PureBand™ Crossover System

The PureBand™ Crossover System in the XLS Series adds an enormous amount of flexibility and performance to any system. With this system, the crossover frequency is completely variable allowing the choice of any crossover point between 50 Hz and 3 kHz on 1/12 octave centers. The use of 4th order Linkwitz-Riley filters provides steep slopes for a seamless transition between high and low drivers. All of the PureBand™ Crossover System settings can be fully configured quickly and easily from the front panel using the intuitive LCD interface.

Crown XLS 1500 DriveCore Series Power Amplifier
Crown XLS 1500 DriveCore Series Power Amplifier is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from An inexpensive quiet and clean workhorse in an 11 pound chassis!I purchased one of these this past summer, and have been enjoying it ever since. I use it as a stereo L/R amp for my reference set of DIY speakers that can tickle 3 ohms, or any other pair I choose to build and use. The fan does intermittently run, but you have to either place you ear right on the grille or go behind the unit to hear it- without music playing. I'm running it balanced from my preamp, and I've only been able to briefly make the 3rd level light blink in a pretty loud setting a couple times. It imparts no sound of its own, to me anyway, and has never complained. Best sound for me was with 'Stereo Bypass' and 'Limiters Off'.Using hifi-commercial XLR levels requires gains be set to about 3:00 or just past for most situations. 1.3V Profi can drive more with less gain. Most consumer RCA outs will require a line-driver like the Clean-Box from Art. I used the Tape-out from my old receiver though without requirement for more level. Your mileage may vary. Also of note is the lower SNR rating of the upper 3 models, and apparently acquaintances of mine have noticed more noise from the 1000 than from these. You can use a screw or small drill-bit to bite the jack-plugs and remove for banana jack usage.Only caveat is that the promo Crown/PE hat is one-size fits most, and my dome is too large to wear it!I highly recommend this beast to any person wanting high-end sound. It does what it has to, and nothing more!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from buyI use this amp in my home theater driving 2 15" woofers and i say wow lots of head room and tons of bass. I have no doubt that this amp will be around for years. and so light weight

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EMC ManThe XLS 1500 is an excellent amplifier. I am using it to drive dual 12" subwoofers in a home theatre setup. Some may argue it is overkill, but the dynamic headroom is incredible and worth it in my opinion. The unit stays very cool due to the efficient class D design. Easy to configure the internal crossover.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for massive HT power at a reasonable costPurchased this as part of a home theater system being installed in a friend's home. Obviously, this is intended to drive the substage, which will consist of dual 15" sealed Dayton Reference series drivers running 4 ohm stereo. While his system is being built I put the amp on the sub in my own HT room. It is an older model TC Sounds 15" driver in a 7 cu ft sealed enclosure built into the wall. First, this amp integrates easily into any HT as it has RCA inputs and the fan is temperature controlled, so no noise! I have yet to hear it turn on, this amp runs very cool both bridged and when running stereo. Also, didn't seem to have any issue being driven by the LFE output of a HT receiver. No maxed out gains or boosted LFE level required to get it humming. When bridged at 8 ohm to the sub the power was ridiculous. I could easily drive the sub to it's max excursion (28mm) with volume control at -15 on my Onkyo receiver and sub level at -6. I then hooked it up 8 ohm stereo. I have had it running this way for a month now with settings similar to where they are when my Adcom 555II is bridged to the same sub at 8 ohms. The Crown exhibits excellent control of the driver and has no issues driving it to reference level. On top of all this, it is really weird the first time you pick up this feather-lite 11 lb amp and try to wrap your head around the rated power numbers. I haven't tested for actual output, but all I can say is it has no issue putting out loads of clean power.Great buy, particularly for those people looking for an outboard HT subwoofer amp with massive power at a reasonable cost. As stated before, the RCA inputs and quiet operation are icing on the cake when used for this purpose.

Does this have a inbuilt crossover?

Ive been trying to figure out what the whole deal with crossovers is, i want to make a sub using the sub i put in related products and this amp, however im not sure what crossover to get or if i even need one at all when using this amp :/Regards
Asked by: Judan
A crossover network simply routes different frequencies to the various drivers in a sound system. It is what sends the low frequencies to the woofers, highs to the tweeters, and so forth. This Crown amplifier does have a built-in crossover network, so you wouldn't need to worry with an external crossover. You can easily set the internal crossover to pass only frequencies below a certain threshold to your subwoofer. This threshold frequency is variable from 3kHz down to 50 Hz in roughly 3-4Hz increments.
