Choose an inverter with an equal or greater wattage rating.

Cobra CPI 480 400W Power Inverter
Cobra CPI 480 400W Power Inverter is rated 4.6667 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb ValueInitially I purchased a more expensive "full sine wave" model elsewhere that caused LOTS of electrical noise in my car. Since it was part of a high end audio system, it was unacceptable. Decided to try the Cobra "modified sine wave" model, and it works perfectly and noise free in my car. And the price is ridiculously low for this type of performance. Highly recommended!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loud, no case, but works as advertisedThe new model that shipped did not include a case as a couple comments mention, and the built-in fan is very loud. That being said, it is easy to set up and works well. The price is also excellent relative to competing vendors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well and good priceComes with a well-made storage case. Works either with 12 volt car plug or clips directly onto battery terminals for higher amperage output.Only (minor) complaint - there is some noise from the cooling fan. Not bad, but noticeable inside a quiet car.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does the job wellIt comes in a very nice carrying case but it is very hard to get all the cables back in the case.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great valueUsed it to run a P.A. system in a parade, and it performed just fine. No electrical noise heard through the speakers, and the fan noise is quite low as well. Very good price for the power rating.

Cobra CPI 480 400W Power Inverter

Seems to indicate low battery when battery level is OK

I've been using this to power some pretty low voltage electronics and laptop, using two 12v 5 amp SLA batteries wired in series (also powering a 15 watt T-amp). It seems to work for 45-60 minutes and then stops providing power and starts beeping to indicate low power. I assumed this was because the batteries were getting low, but when I test them, they don't show much change at all. I wonder if the batteries and/or the inverter just need to "rest" for a while and then could be used again without a charge? How would I determine what would be a good rest period?
Asked by: exaltron
Well I ended up calling Cobra and it seems like this isn't the most efficient system. The tech explained to me that the power inverter is meant for car batteries and so if the voltage drops below 11v, the inverter will beep and shut down. So even though there is plenty of charge left in the batteries, I would have to recharge them- not very convenient. I wonder if there is a better type of inverter for this application. My only choice at this point if I want longer life is to pick up one or two more batteries, adding significant weight to my system.
