AviaTrix Sealed MTM Components Only Speaker Kit Pair

This AviaTrix Sealed MTM components kit contains everything required to construct the sealed version (L/C/R) of the MTM AviaTrix speaker project. The sealed version of the AviaTrix is recommended for a 15 liter enclosure for center channel or as small mains—the f3 models below 60 Hz, and will integrate well with a subwoofer. The AviaTrix Sealed MTM has adequate bass extension and can be used as a stand alone speaker system for 2-channel music. At the heart of the components kit are two Dayton Audio RS28F-4 1-1/8" silk dome tweeters and four Dayton Audio ND140-8 5-1/4" aluminum cone midbass drivers. Check the speaker project that inspired the Aviatrix Kit. See below for a complete listing of components included in this kit.

This kit + Knock-Down Birch 0.60 ft³ Monitor Cabinet (Part # 300-7050) for "sideways" install?

Note: I'm a total beginner.I read that the "AviaTrix is recommended for a 15 liter enclosure", and the knockdown cabinets mentioned above seem about right at ~ 17L. If I do a "sideways" install, it looks like there would be just enough room for the drivers, perhaps with the tweeter off center a bit (cabinets are 17" high external, 16" high internal).Any reason why this wouldn't work, or any advice you might offer a total beginner?Should I use the included braces to divide the airspace or just toss them out?Would I really need all 5lbs of polyfill? Thanks in advance!
Asked by: JasonHall
MTM speakers are always built to be positioned horizontally. Also, you want to keep all the drivers symetrically aligned. The crossover is designed specifically for this layout. Yes - the knockdown cabinets will work, however, the components you are buying would normally cost about $1000+ in a store bought system. I think you should should get a better cabinet to match the quality of the drivers. Look at the HI FI SPEAKER CABINETS

Anything I need to buy that isn't included in the Aviatrix kit?

Is there anything, other than wood/glue, that I might need that isn't included in this kit? I.e. speaker wire? Soldering iron/Solder? What kind of wire is needed on the crossover? Etc..
Asked by: Natedawg
I would look at some of the cabinets available at PE - they are very nice and you are building a pretty nice, high end kit... Yes, you will need wire, solder, soldering iron. Get a good one so your welds are solid. As for wire - pure oxygenated copper strand is fine. 18 gauge. I like silver solder - it's not that much more expensive and is used more in audiophile applications. Only other option would be leitz wire on the tweeter circuit - but very expensive and you have to have quite the ear to hear the difference.

Do you have a single package for center channel?

I would like to build 3 of these. It is almost cheaper to buy 2 kits than to buy 1 kit and then the ala carte parts of the center channel.
Asked by: MikeGCNY
the large cabinet/horn trix ,sold in pairs. is for low end bass, center channel needs no low bass 80 to 150 hz is low aplenty ! vocal and center stage treble are. so is horizontal spread . a sealed dual chamber ,dual tweeter/ small dual woofer is the going thing , now my poverty audio tip ; car stereo speakers have strange effects parameters like 100 hz peak Humm that's mid bass like snare drums, ,[listen to the speakers at the local car stereo shop].. each driver is 4 ohm also.. and home amps need 8 ohm xover center channel only one YOU COULD EVEN.BUY A PAIR AND WIRE THEM IN SERIES TO 8 OHM's.. BUILD A 3/4 IN MDF SHELVING BOARD BOX, MOST CHAIN HOME HARWARE STORES WILL EVEN CUT IT FOR FREE OR $.25 A CUT BOX SIZE NOT TOO CRITICAL REMEMBER LOW BASS IS NOT NEEDED TIGHTNESS OF CONE MOVEMENT IS.. FINISH TO MATCH THE TRIX AND SHOW THE WORLD YOUR ART! [I THINK THE T-3,5 1/4 AUTO KIT AND OTHER CLEARANCE DRIVERS WOULD MORE THAN KEEP UP WITH THE TRIX] AND YOU HAVE TWO 4 OHM XOVERS LEFT FOR THE FRONT OF YOUR CAR! when you want to upgrade ALWAYS PLAN AHEAD!

Crossover diagram

Is there a diagram vailable that illustrates how to wire the crossover components together? I checked Curt's AviaTrix project page and it showed response curves but no crossover wiring diagram.Thanks.
Asked by: Sprockethead
The crossover diagram is available on the product page for the kit, to the right under "Manuals/Resources." Here is a link for your convenience:http://www.parts-express.com/pedocs/manuals/300-704-parts-express-aviatrix-sealed-mtm-components-kit-aviatrix-crossover-schematic.pdf

Can the AviaTrix speakers be installed in a TriTrix Cabinet?

Can the AviaTrix speaker kit be installed in the "TriTrix MTM TL Knock-Down CNC Speaker Cabinet Pair?" I've already built a TriTrix system, and it sounds great. I might be interested in upgrading, and would like to use the same cabinet design if it will fit. Thanks!C
Asked by: cew278
Technically speaking, yes the AviaTrix components could be installed in a TriTrix cabinet. Realistically, there are definitely differences in the two designs, and the AviaTrix components and crossover are most certainly not optimized for the TriTrix enclosure. Although opinions can vary greatly, I wouldn't think the result would be considered an "upgrade" to most listeners.
