Aurum Cantus AC-200MKII 8" Carbon Fiber Sandwich Woofer
Aurum Cantus AC-200MKII 8" Carbon Fiber Sandwich Woofer is rated 4.6364 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Needs to be crossed low.I couldn't get them to sound right using the hardware I have on hand, I may try an electronic crossover in the future to try and find the optimal crossover setup. Crossing them at 1khz resulted in poor results. These are probably best in the 100-750hz range. Initially I had them in a ported enclosure tuned to about 50hz, bass was boomy and mids were absent. I adjust the port to tune to below 25hz which brought things under control, but the hotness in the 2k range became too evident, I found them harsh although detailed and warm sounding. The bass response was also underwhelming, though it did extend deep it lacked body, perhaps there are power issues there as I was only using a 100 WPC amplifier to drive them. End of the day, I had better results with a similarly priced driver from another company.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from surprised by results-clarity and articulationI paired this with a Dayton Silk Dome Tweeter, 275-140..and Eminence 2 way crossover, 290-636. In selecting a tweeter, I actually had mistakenly chosen a 4 ohm tweeter to pair with this 8 ohm woofer. With my loss of hearing above 5K..which often occurs with great age, the tweeter was "Hot" !..It was intersting to hear such brightness and clarity. In the end, I experimented with a 10 W 4 ohm Resistor in series with the tweeter..that was improvement...but a 2.2 resistor added to that provided a nominal R of 8.6 ohms total. This gave me a nice balance, and permitted enough energy from the crossover to drive this good quality woofer. By 'quality', I was pleased to hear a realistic bass note as a bow was drawn across the strings..meaning sounded like a REAL bass viol in the room. For a timpani "run" in a chase scene in "The Grand Budapest Hotel", the speaker demonstrated its 8 mm excursion..and sounded very much like a kettle drum. Meaning the 'articulation' of the lower notes are accurately replicated. Now these are notes from a tube amp builder..(good spkr performance was at 1 to 2 WPC)...having built tube amps for 7 yrs..and now spkr building...yes my efforts are still on the learning curve. Some of the truly knowledgeable guys here will find fault with my experiment with this spkr...but I can say I feel like it's the best speaker I have built !...having built five different configurations. I really like this spkr!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the PriceThese speakers are worth their price. These speakers Match very well the pair of Aurum Cantus ribbon tweeters I also purchased from Parts Express. The woofers were a little stiff right out of the box (which they were packed well and secure in) but improved on a daily basis until after about a week of break-in they began blending more and more seamlessly with the tweeters in my two-way design. My speakers now sound comparable to a good high-end speaker. I now have an extended low end to match the extended high end the ribbons gave me. Thanks again, Parts Express for a good product, and it's quick, secure delivery. See you again soon...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best value for money 8" wooferThis speaker for the money is the best I've found. I'm not technical but from a pure sound perspective it's amazing. Only disappointment is the freight charge from the US to Oz but at the discounted unit cost of $79 it was still a bargin.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great DriverI have used these drivers in a two way system that I have. I fist tried to use the Dayton DC200-8 woofer, they seem to have way to much base and very weak mid range. I then purchased a pair of Aurum Cantus 8" Woofers. These drivers still have a good base sound as well as great mid range

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good sensivityIndeed, this woofer travels a lot even at low levels. Maybe too much for a vented speaker.

Aurum Cantus AC-200MKII 8" Carbon Fiber Sandwich Woofer

a vented volume of .22f3 seems very small , my design has it in an enclosure of ..40f3 with a 10in. passive radiator, dayton audio . will this work ? . I have subs for low end so bass ex is not an issue .

Asked by: danmankf

With a large enough enclosure and proper port dimensions could this woofer achieve response as low as 20hz with reasonable performance?

Asked by: Pontifex
In a nutshell, no. Due to the parameters of this driver it will have limited useable output below about 35 Hz, which is also considering room gain. BassBox is recommending a tuning frequency of about 38 Hz for an "optimally flat" alignment. You can certainly tune lower but you will reach a point of diminishing returns.

Sealed box size

If I calculate the sealed box size in WinISD, I get 12,8L (0,47 ft3) with an F3 of around 76Hz, which is quite different from what you post in the details (0,11 ft3 with an F3 124Hz) for a sealed enclosure.Where does this difference come from and any idea what I should use here?
Asked by: Maarten
The easy answer is, two different programs, two different results. We use BassBox for all of our calculations which has much different defaults and many more settings than a free download online. With the low Qts of this woofer a small sealed box will yield a very high F3 as our calculation shows. These are best suited for a small ported enclosure.

Can these be used in a car door in infinite baffle? Will be crossed from 50-200hz.

Asked by: fyalinks
With a Q that low I would not recommend these for an infinite baffle application if you need them to play down to 50 Hz.
