Aurum Cantus AC-130MKII 5-1/4" Carbon Fiber/Kevlar Woofer
I bought this driver but it's stopped working - or at least it works intermittently - when I take the cover of and press edges.
Can the unit be repaired in any way or should I just replace it. There's clearly some bad connection inside.
Your situation involves many variables to properly diagnose. Most speakers that start to work only when a particular part of the cone is pressed on, are suffering from what is known as a "scratchy voicecoil". This is usually caused by one of two things: 1# the speaker has been driven by an amplifier that was clipping #sending DC to the speaker, instead of AC# and the voice coil iteslf has developed a "hot spot" or "sticking" point. If that is the case, the driver had been damaged and should be replaced #BTW, this is not a warranty issue, it is due to faulty equipment or improper use#. Option 2# Many times when a small driver is installed it is not torques down properly #evenly and, by hand#. Respectfully speaking, if you used a drill and ran each screw completely in with it, you could have easily torqued #bent# the speaker frame, and that's why it is shorting #this is frequently the thing I find when you can "press" on a certain spot and the speaker starts to play again...# To see if this is the issue, loosen the 4 mounting screws and, at low volume, see if the speakers starts to play normally. If so, begin to hand tighten the screws opposite each other #like installing a wheel on a car# little by little, until the speaker os taught and still playing. Good luck. Let us know the outcome! :)
