ART Pro VLA II Professional 2-Channel Compressor

The ProVLA II is a tube driven Vactrol®-based compressor/leveling amplifier designed to excel in any professional audio environment. Superior performance and an incredible tone makes the ProVLA II an indispensable tool for tracking, mixing, mastering, dynamic control of live sound sources or for use in broadcast audio. Capable of delivering a far more musical natural sounding and sonically transparent compression than competitive units in its class, the ProVLA II uses an Opto-electronic circuit rather than the more typical design VCA driven level detection circuit. This VCA-less design coupled with a 12AT7 vacuum tube in the gain stage makes the Pro-VLA II the ideal dynamic control device for critical audio applications. Exceptional signal integrity with extremely low noise and low distortion is achieved in the ProVLA II by utilizing a transformerless design throughout. Unlike typical compression units that use Voltage Controlled Amplifiers (VCA's) to handle level detection, the Pro VLA II's Opto-electronic design allows a far more transparent and musical sounding compression without sounding aggressive or un-natural. This Vactrol based optical electronic circuitry is the basic component of the classic highly sought after compressors of past. Vactrol® design allows the ProVLA II to react to audio signal in much the same way the eye naturally adjusts to fluctuations in light levels – smoothly, quietly and almost imperceptibly.

The ProVLA II is a soft knee leveling amplifier by design. Although capable of providing dramatic compression effects, the ProVLA II was designed to excel in any application where transparent, expressively musical dynamics control is desired.

Large highly visible backlit analog VU meters accurately display input and output levels while extremely fast 10-segment LED’s display gain reduction. For added functionality, the LED’s display either average level for mastering & mixing applications or peak hold for monitoring individual sources when tracking audio.

XLR and 1/4" TRS balanced inputs and outputs are provided to ensure the ProVLA II can connect with any audio source or hardware. A +4 dBu/-10 dBu mode switch optimizes ProVLA II I/O for either consumer or professional equipment.

Specifications: • Attack Time: 0.25msec. to 50msec. variable • Dynamic Range: greater than 100 dB (20-20 kHz) • Equivalent Input Noise: @+4 dBu: -99 dBu ("A" weighted /@-10 dBV.

ART Pro VLA II Professional 2-Channel Compressor
ART Pro VLA II Professional 2-Channel Compressor is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best optical compressor for the moneyThis is a very musical, quiet and reliable compressor. I've been using this in my rack for a year now and it's sounding slightly better than when it was taken out of the box. The only thing I would highly recommend is swapping out the noisier Chinese tubes for some nice EHs or Mullards. This took the overall sound to yet a whole new level. Possibly the best compressor for under $1000 even when compared to the top names.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Splendid, Transparent, affordableOur rental company uses these for FOH mixes as well as dedicated compression from drum-mixes, bass and vocals. I have also used it for mastering final recording mixes, YouTube audio tracks and radio-station broadcast leveling installations. The rental company has twelve: three per rack. I have three old ones I purchased used from our company. All of them work perfectly & are remarkably consistent. Ours have been cooked all day in the hot sun and frozen in un-heated vans during midwestern winters. None have died on us. At low ratios (2 to 4 :1) these excel at transparent, almost imperceptible compression. You sometimes need the VU meters just to see it's working.Even at limiting ratios (20:1) it still sounds musical with very little pumping. It's VERY quiet; as quiet or quieter than more expensive units like Manley or Avalon. I like the old-school VU meters and intuitive controls... All the knobs work smoothly with that dampened, high-quality feeling. Hook-up is easy: all balanced 1/4 TRS or XLR for low noise. Simple back-panels are CLEARLY marked; a bonus when you are peering into a rack with a flashlight in your mouth at ten-minutes till showtime. These work GREAT for side-chain applications; very helpful when you mix unfamiliar and often erratic live bands. At three bills a pop, you can afford to get several, and if you want to learn the joys of side-chaining, I highly recommend you get at least two.Over the last three decades, I have used many Yorkville / Traynor / ART products and I have to say, they all have served us well. (We still use Traynor amps for our back-line.) This inexpensive compressor is a real gem in their pro-rack line-up. Though we have recently changed to QSC speakers and Mackie mixers, we still keep these wonderful compressors. They are simple, clear and work beautifully.

ART Pro VLA II Professional 2-Channel Compressor

I'm told I should use a compressor to help eliminate background noise such as people talking or someone coughing while recording a single person speaking to an audience. Is this true?

Asked by: munchkin5890
No, a compressor will actually enhance the noise. A compressor reduces the dynamic range so a whisper can be at the same level and a shout. What you need to use is a noise gate. Usually these are part of an expander or sometimes built on pro compressors/limiters.

does this hook up between the power amp and preamp

Asked by: speedybose
There are several methods of processing audio signals but all of them work with low or line level signals. Yes, if you wish to compress your entire sound then the line or main output of your preamp or mixer plugs into the compressor input and the outputs of the compressor drives the inputs of the power amp.If you bi-amp or use a sub woofer then you could compress the low out signals and the mids and highs differently using two of these compressors. You could also place this compressor before your electronic crossover and compress everything. As long as you keep your signal processing line or low level you can add any number of neat equipment.
