2.5" or 1.5" foam for lining Emotiva ERM 6.2 speakers

Hi, I am interested in this foam as I have disassembled my Emotiva ERM 6.2 speakers to perform a capacitor upgrade on the networks. While everything is apart, I was thinking of lining the cabinets. I don't know too much about cabinet acoustics so I am wondering if I should go with the 1.5"or 2.5" foam? Is the thicker always better? Any area where I shouldn't use the foam? Should I remove the polyfill after adding the foam? Any advice is much appreciated. Couldn't find an online spec sheet of my speakers, but you can see them here.http://www.hifivision.com/speakers/22473-emotiva-speakers-equally-worthy.htmlhttp://forums.audioholics.com/forums/write-your-own-review/55541-emotiva-erm-6-2-a.htmlhttp://app.audiogon.com/listings/emotiva-erm-6-2-speakers-free-shippingThanks! Foam is used inside a speaker for two reasons. It helps prevent standing waves in the cabinet which can color the sound, and absorbs the backwave of the drivers, specifically the midrange so all you hear is what comes from the front of the cone. The difference in thickness will determine the frequency in which the foam actually starts working. The thicker foam will start absorbing at a lower frequency closer to the lower treble, the thinner will start at a high enough frequency not to make much difference.

volume displacement?

These seem to be somewhat porous so I am wondering what the volume displacement is per cu in, or for a 12x12x2 1/2 piece. Would the actual volume be the piece, or is it less due to its porous characteristic?
Asked by: drsa
All acoustic foam is open cell foam which means it is mostly air. This may take up some volume, but it will not be enough to change internal volume or make any kind of an audible difference.
