Product Details

#8-32 Hurricane Nuts 50 Pcs.

One-of-a-kind blind nut that offers extremely simple installation and outstanding holding power. The unique fluted design of the Hurricane nut allows it to be inserted simply with a hammer or by pulling in with a screw. Unlike conventional T-nuts, the Hurricane nut goes into wood easily without the pressures that it may take to get conventional teeth fully seated. But don't let the small flutes fool you, these nuts can hold at torques that you simply cannot imagine. You have to see the performance for yourself to believe their effectiveness! Once you use a Hurricane nut, you will never go back to an ordinary T-nut. Recommended hole size is 13/64".

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Hurricane nuts - I WOULD NOT USE IN MDF AGAINTitle says it all - most would not hold any torque.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from When they come loose, get out the hacksawI took all the precautions listed here, yet still the very first one I installed stripped out the hole in the MDF. I had to hacksaw the screw head off to get the driver free - risking damaging the driver and the enclosure. I will find another solution.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Forget T-Nuts-But Use Along With Some EpoxyThese work excellent-but use with glue-specifically epoxy-not urethane or yellow glue.Use a fast or slow drying epoxy-either coat just the outside on the back side, and/or put a small dab on the inside of the backside ('washer' end-were it contacts the work surface) before you push the nut into the work surface. The key to keeping the threads clean and free of glue is to put a dab of silicone grease on the screws you will be using, and hand screw them into the hurricane nut as the glue is drying. This will keep out any glue in the threads, and if some does happen to get around the threads-it won't stick as glue wont stick to silicone-and also provides lubrication. The combination of the nut holding power and the addition of the epoxy will make these work with most anything.Tnuts end up cracking MDF-especially old MDF in vintage speakers-don't go there-these work excellent-and with a little extra effort and some epoxy- will never loosen.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Alternative to T-nutsI could write this review by simply saying, "what kurt said." the only things I'd add is that hurricane nuts are more likely to loosen than T-nuts, but they don't split the baffle material, and they do make for a neater job. I have experienced a few cases where they came loose, but that is avoidable if they are used properly. Always pull hurricane nuts into the hole, rather than driving it with a hammer. Their design causes them to screw down into the hold, in a direction that causes them to tighten in the baffle when the mounting screw is tightened. But they will loosen, when the screw is turned in the opposite direction to remove it, if the threads have been fouled sufficiently so as to produce resistance. Always test your newly installed hurricane nuts with the screw you will be using to make sure it inserts and removes easily. I have fouled the threads sufficiently to cause a problem when I got in a hurry during assembly and pushed the screw through the driver mounting hole and the gasket tape behind it. That caused some of the gasket tape material to be pushed into the hurricane nut. I could tighten the screw with effort, but when I needed to remove it, it twisted twisted out and became a free-spinning nut within the enclosure. Glue will very likely solve the problem, but it is easy to get some on the thread, which of course causes fouling. But, install them with reasonable care, and you'll end up with a trouble-free and nicer looking installation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just like it says - better than t-nutsBeen a long time user of t-nuts, and one of the common problems encountered was using it for mounting a driver. There just isn't enough 'meat' near the driver's hole cutout to hammer the t-nut in without doing damage.Completely resolved with the hurricane nut! The amount of pull required to draw the nut into the hole is minimal (I just use a bolt to draw it in by the threads- no hammer required). And the 'marketing speak' you read about is finally true- the amount of torque you can apply to these is amazing; much more than I would suggest using on a driver anyways.Highly recommended. Only thing I would suggest is when plywood is your medium, use a 7/32" bit instead of 13/64". Draws in plenty tight without risk of splitting. When using MDF 13/64" is probably the best choice, but add some PVA glue to the hole just prior to installation to help bind the substrate from future slippage. MDF is sawdust, after all.

why would you use this size 8-32 over either the 10-32 or 1/4 size

Different sized fasteners are used in different applications based on various factors. Size, strength, physical appearance, and others are some of the criteria typically considered when choosing a fastener.

what black screw from PE goes with this nut?

Asked by: jalng63
The only screw we carry which would work with this nut is referenced below. Any respectable hardware store should have #8-32 screws available.

What is the mounting depth?

I am building a TriTrix center channel out of 3/4" birch plywood. With the recess for the driver flanges, I only have about 1/2" of wood in which to mount these nuts. I would feel a lot better about buying these for my project if the full dimensions were listed somewhere.
Asked by: OUGryphon
The shaft length is 1/4", the overall diameter of the base is 11/16".
