Electrolytic non-polarized (bi-polar) capacitors are perfect low-cost solutions for use in passive speaker crossovers. These capacitors feature axial leads, a 5% dissipation factor, and are rated at a 100 VDC working voltage which equates to approximately 200 watts power handling. Sold individually.

The speakers sound excellent after the rebuild, and I've used only the value caps of this type to rebuild the speakers with. It just goes to show you don't need high-priced boutique caps in order to make sweet, sweet music.

It handles 100 volt, so it can handle more power than it will ever need to (200 watts), so I expectit will be reliable. This isnt a high end cap, but I'd be lying if I said i could tell the difference compared to the expensive ones.

4.7uF 100V Electrolytic Non-Polarized Crossover Capacitor

I'm looking to replace the crossovers in a set of advent prodigy towers. They are very basic but contain a 13uf 50v and a 5uf 50v cap that is not available on this site. Would this 4.7uf work for the 5uf cap and if so what difference would it make?

Yes a 4.7 would work in place of a 5, the difference would be negligible at worst. You could also add two caps together that add up to the value you need, but it would not be very beneficial here.

do these cut out low or high sounds

In speaker cross-overs, capacitors generally cut the low frequencies to the tweeter letting the high frequencies pass. On the other hand, inductors cut the high frequencies to the woofer, letting the low frequencies pass.

What is the tolerance of the cap?

My old Spicas had 10% tolerance so it would be nice not to have to buy several to find matches that are within 10% of the specified value.
