Dayton APA150 150W Power Amplifier

I like that this amp doesn't have alot of the extra unnecessary frills that you get (and pay for) with most receivers. It is intended to take an audio signal and push drivers with it, and it does that pretty well. I won't bother listing everything that it does right; the high ratings speak to that, but i will note a couple cautionary points.

1.) The auto on/off is a bit geriatric. The input signal has to be LOUD to wake it up from standby. It will also turn off very quickly (less than 2 minutes) during quiet periods in movies or video games. Suspenseful music is not enough to keep it awake at comfortable listening levels.

2.) I haven't seen the fan kick in yet, despite the chassis feeling quite warm to the touch. It has not gotten hot enough to produce the infamous cooking amp smell, but i would have greater piece of mind if i could catch that fan on at least once.

It works well and sounds great; those couple points are all that kept it from getting a couple 5's.

I use 6 of these amplifiers to power 5 way active speakers in conjunction with the Behringer digital crossover. I am very happy with the performance and value.

The internal amp on my Klipsch subwoofer went. I was able to remove the electronics but didn t want to disturb the tuned internal volume of the bass-reflex enclosure, so elected to get the Dayton APA150. Fortunately the Klipsch driver is 8 ohms, so matched nicely with the APA-150 operating in bridged mono. The results are nothing short of amazing. The bass is clean, tight, and more felt than heard. Be sure to hook up the speaker so that it is in phase with your front speakers. Do this by playing the same full range signal through a front speaker and the APA-150/subwoofer combination and switching the leads to the subwoofer until the sound images dead center between the two. Then engage the low pass filter. The APA-150 turns itself on and off without a sound.
