Dayton RS125-4 5" Reference Woofer 4 Ohm

Purchased as a drop-in replacement for a small bookshelf (Pinnacle 2), my 1st concern was physical size. This driver is small for a 5", worked for me. I did no port or crossover mods, and still ended up with decent tight bass and a little too much brightness. Probably to be expected with the aluminum cone and stock x-over. Well-made, solid performer.

I used this woofer in a mini, 2-way system paired with a Pyramid, titanium horn tweeter. I originally used a 1.5 liter ported box tuned for an F3 of 85Hz, but found that with its limited x-max and cone area, this woofer would bottom its suspension on some low frequency music material when driven at moderate (1-5W) volume levels. I switched to a sealed box of the same volume, with some loss in bass output, but this cured the suspension bottoming. For the x-over, I wound up using a 4th order, 2.5kHz network with an additional LCR trap at 7kHz to cure the very shrill sounding cone breakup. This was not the easiest woofer to use, but the resulting system can play quite loud, with decent bass and a very clean midrange.

This might look like the other drivers in the RS series, but its performance and character are nowhere close. I bought it thinking its efficiency would be great. That is certainly not the case. Efficiency is gone after frequency response is leveled by crossover.
Perhaps it is useful for a PA speaker system, because its super-loud, high compression midrange could reach quite the distance outdoors.
