Electric guitars, guitar amplification, and the birth of Rock-n-Roll in the 1950's collectively established a new use for loudspeakers. Speaker choices were limited in those days and amplifier manufacturers had to purchase products that were common to other applications. Usually, this meant a low-power speaker, often with an Alnico magnet, and limited cone and coil travel.

Due to the nature of the speaker's construction, the sound of the guitar and amplifier combination was impacted by the speaker design. Amplified guitar was a bit more aggressive duty than most other speaker applications at the time and the speakers were frequently challenged in terms of their mechanical movement and linearity. Guitarist learned how to control this non-linearity and use the resulting tonal characteristics to their advantage. Speaker break-up became cool and was a desired feature by most guitarists. The great guitar tones we know now are a result of those events.

Although there are a multitude of distinctive guitar speaker tones available today, they can be broken down into two main categories. We have Marshall and Celestion to thank for the distinctively "British tones" that we are so familiar with. Fender, Peavey, and SLM (Crate/Ampeg) worked with speaker companies like Eminence, Oxford, CTS, JBL, and Electro-Voice to establish tones that are distinctively "American".

Eminence is proud to present the Patriot™ and Red Coat™ series of guitar speakers. Incorporating both British and American cone technology into speakers that are manufactured in the USA gives us the ability to provide you with virtually any tone you desire. Be it British or American, clean or dirty, big bass or screaming highs, we have a speaker that will allow you to "Pick Your Sound".

twin amp
Friday, June 4, 2010
Tony M from Omaha NE

I used a pair of these in a hybrid amp I built for use at church. a tube fired preamp going into 250+ watts worth of solid state emitter follower output
the tone is nothing short of spectacular.
no part of its range seems to peak while all parts of its range project beautifully.
Clean Ch work really projects the chime of the tubes at any volume, the sound just hangs out through the church with a haunting presence.
Lightly overdriven the sound is clean to sweet blues without ever getting shrill.
stick thy foot in the heavy metal peddle and you find what the red white and blues does best. but understand, it does nothing poorly.

Flyingz from Unknown Location

I lost 1/2 the original cost returning two of these but it was worth it. Returned due to unacceptable midrange response.

The highs are somewhat thin and the lows are woofy.

Red, White, and Blues
Monday, April 14, 2008
chop883 from Clarkston, MI

I had an amp that I felt was overly bright with my Eminence Man o Wars (similar to Celestion G12T-75s). I called Eminence and asked for an alternative speaker recomendation based on what I was trying to do (roll off the top end a bit). Anthony at Eminence suggested this speaker. I bought a pair for a 2 x 12" closed back cab and they worked like a charm for what I was trying to accomplish, roll off the high end without changing the overall voicing too much. I like this speaker alot and will use it for more applications in the future. I did some research prior to buying this and many people compared this speaker to the Electro Voice EV12L. After receiving the speaker, I can see why. The frequency responce charts are a close match to the EV12L, but when you just look at the cone, you can tell. No doping, paper cone, etc. It even looks like a EV12L (to me). Anyway, very effective speaker. To me they seem a bit more subdued than a Jensen C12N, which to my ears is good if you are dealing with a super bright twin. This is a great speaker and will work well for you if you use it with a desired effect in mind. I have run many different sounds through it. It handles overdrive quite well. If your amp has a good adjustable prescence control, you will be able to dial this speaker in perfect for just about any application. If not, I think this speaker was made for a Fender style amp in mind, something that passes alot of treble. Also, the Mesa Stilleto is a bright amp, if I ever had one of those, i would pair it with these as a first test. If you are really looking to tame the top end way down, Anthony suggested the Cannebus Rex, but i did not want to go that extreme. Enjoy.
