DISCONTINUED Tang Band W3-879S 3" Shielded Driver

I needed a replacement for my blown 3 inch full range drivers in a set of speakers from a JVC micro component system - no space for anything bigger in the room in question.
After much spec browsing I found these and dropped them into the speaker cases.
They were a definitive upgrade to the old drivers, which made the old JVC Micro CD systems sound so damned neat.
Now the speakers are even better.
I neither need nor want wall and floor rattling base. The speakers are in a small room, and the neighbors are not supposed to hear them, but I want to hear detailed high quality sound.
The bottom is in the audible range and satisfies musical as well as video listening purposes.
Midrange and treble are all there, allow for classical, jazz, and even have a little punch for some rock.

These 3 inch drivers allow for a super compact setup and are very sweet sounding.

I frankly don't want to go back to multi driver speakers now, because my ears are sensitive and I get a headache when sound gets weird out of phase effects with so many multi driver units (2way/3way, etc)- not an issue with these full range drivers!

Would they be good for a large room? No, not enough safe power handling headroom, especially on an amp over 10 W/chan RMS (I have a lot of low powered vintage high end gear, so no issue). That is the only reason why they don't get a straight 5 for performance here.

GREAT for low powered micro systems, tube gear, and vintage lower powered solid state amps - like the smaller Marantz, Superscope, or Sony receivers

After some break-in you get very detailed soundscapes, nice warm midrange, bottom is there, and highs are as neat as gently waving hair in a summer breeze.

I am using these in little 5" cube cabinets,and they make great rear/surround speakers.Plus I am using a pair as midrange drivers to help fill out the vocals from my main front speakers.For that duty I am using 100uf caps to block the bass.These little guys have many uses from pc speakers, to midranges in a 3-way design.Very smooth sound.
